Public benefits

The direct benefit that flows from our organisation’s purposes are that a derelict space is transformed into a children’s indoor play centre, providing a safe, fun, social and educational environment for children and their guardians in an area of deprivation most needing such facilities; local jobs are created and training opportunities provided

for the unemployed supporting them into employment; antisocial behaviour and dereliction declines in an area in need of regeneration and footfall and trade in the local shopping centre increases improving the viability of local businesses and improving the local economy. The healthy development and education of children is supported and children are encouraged to learn through play, explore new experiences and improve their language skills; parents are encouraged to read with their children and children learn to enjoy reading; local parents with young children and childminders are supported and feel less isolated and more confident in their roles encouraging healthy development of the children in their care; children who are disabled or have special needs are able to access indoor facilities for play and learning on similar terms to their peers, improving their social inclusion. This can be demonstrated through feedback from beneficiaries and partner agencies and data collected of activities, the annual accounts and reports of the organisation. There is no harm arising from these purposes. The inhabitants of Colin area of West Belfast and the surrounding areas of Belfast and Lisburn The Charity employs staff but the personal benefit to them is an incidental and necessary consequence of the charity conducting its charitable purposes.

What your organisation does

Roar and Explore has transformed a derelict space into a children’s indoor play centre, providing a safe, fun, social and educational environment for children and their guardians. It is based in Colin, West Belfast, an area in need of ‘sustainable social, economic and environmental regeneration’ targeted for redevelopment by the NI Executive under

the Urban Villages initiative. Roar and Explore has created 17 local jobs, many taken up by the previously unemployed, and provides training opportunities for local people into employment. It has helped to address antisocial behaviour and dereliction and increased footfall in the shopping centre, improving the trade of struggling local businesses. Roar and Explore offers families an affordable fun resource which encourages education and development of children, providing healthy physical activity and play in a safe environment. It breaks the social isolation of families with young children, encourages parents to read with their children, and stimulates the imaginations and enthusiasm of children to learn through play and explore new experiences. It is the only indoor play area of its type with wheelchair access and was developed taking into account children with autism and other special needs. It is used by schools, youth groups, local teams and clubs, including children with severe learning disabilities. Roar and Explore runs a weekly timetable of sessions and over 4000 children have been provided with arts and crafts, cookery, music and rhymes, encouraging learning and the development of language skills. The Centre runs a book exchange. It is well-used by local parents and childminders and provides morning toddlers soft play sessions with free juice and toast. Any surplus profits from the Centre are used for charitable purposes in the local community. It recently opened a recreational area for older children, which is used by local youth clubs diverting children at risk of involvement in anti-social behaviour.
