Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from our first purpose include enhanced collective and individual knowledge and understanding of the marine environment and marine biodiversity. The majority of activities will occur outdoors resulting in the enhanced personal and social communication skills, increased physical health, enhanced mental and spiritual

health, enhanced spiritual, sensory, and aesthetic awareness. Outdoor learning and volunteering experiences will also extend personal horizons through greater appreciation and understanding of the world and people, greater understanding of the need for sustainable relationships between people and their environment, enhanced practical problem solving and team work skills and a positive and knowledgeable response towards personal health and wellbeing. Volunteers will benefit from improved wellbeing and connection with local activities and overall improved quality of life and enhanced career skills. Activities will also provide enhanced knowledge and understanding of human impact on the marine environment and methods which can be used by to reduce impacts on the marine environment therefore promoting the protection and preservation of the marine environment. Individuals and the collective public will also have an enhanced understanding of boating and fishing history through access being granted to a historic vessel being preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. Activities which promote the protection and preservation of the marine environment will result in improvements to the local environment resulting in reduced pollution and littering and therefore better quality of life and wellbeing for the public. Enhanced knowledge of how to protect and preserve the environment will result in better water quality, air quality and reduced emissions. These benefits will be demonstrated through recording and monitoring of participation numbers at activities, participant reviews and feedback. Promotion of the protection and preservation of the marine environment will be evidenced through media outreach statistics and social media engagement statistics. Improvements to the environment will be demonstrated through direct litter collections, savings in fuel and emissions as a result of activities undertaken or education provided. The purposes of our charity may lead to the following harm; physical injury incurred by participation in activities, however this is rare and the benefit outweighs the harm and is significantly reduced by policies/procedures in place to address risks, e.g. safeguarding and child protection policy, health and safety policy, code of conduct for volunteers. The charity’s beneficiaries are the general public, School age to 80+, existing Environmental NGOs and volunteers, the scientific research community, academic community. Specific projects may address the needs of specific sections of society such as the fishing community and voluntary sector. The only private benefit flowing from this purpose is improved and enhanced career opportunities for volunteers as a result of experience and knowledge gained during work in a voluntary capacity and this is incidental and necessary because Citizen Sea is dedicated to providing volunteering opportunities to the general public in order to achieve its purpose. The direct benefits which flow from our second purpose include enhanced individual and collective knowledge and understanding of marine science and sustainability. Citizen science enables participants to make a direct contribution to research, increase their scientific understanding, and learning about environmental issues. Increasing citizen engagement in scientific research helps to build stronger connections between citizens and scientists bringing a deeper understanding of environmental issues. By engaging the public in data collection, volunteers will benefit from engaging in science but also the benefits of working in the outdoors. Volunteers will increase the geographical scope of data collection in areas which may not have been the subject of survey methods before, therefore improving scientific knowledge within the local area. Improved local scientific data collection will enable scientists to improve environmental quality in areas which may not have been considered before or where there was a lack of data. Engaging the public in Citizen Science will improve scientific literacy increasing their own knowledge and understanding of science. Engagement with Citizen Science also improves participation in environmental protection and preservation and advocacy. These benefits will be evidenced through a record of participation numbers and data collected, participant’s reviews and feedback. The charity’s beneficiaries are the general public in Northern Ireland, School age to 80+, existing Environmental NGOs and volunteers, the scientific research community, academic community.

What your organisation does

Our aim is to inspire others to engage with our marine environment through citizen science, education, research and awareness raising. We feel that although we live on a small island, many people are detached and isolated from the sea. We want to inspire local people and visitors to become stewards of our greatest natural resource in order to

create healthier seas and coastal communities now and in the future. By bringing people to the sea on board ‘Sea Bird’, a beautiful wooden hulled traditionally built ‘Ringnetter’ type vessel, we will enhance understanding and engagement of our maritime heritage and culture whilst giving them the tools to care for and protect the wildlife and environment within it. During our excursions we introduce passengers to local wildlife by engaging them in Citizen Science projects such as bird counting, marine litter survey and beach cleans. During our Science Club for kids, we introduce children to maritime safety, navigation and marine biodiversity in their local area and show how our own personal actions can have an impact on local ecosystems ad ultimately our local community. Our long term goal is to gradually refit the Seabird vessel as a carbon neutral, sail assisted ship, which we will showcase to other boat users as a best practice example in sustainable transport and navigation. By giving this traditional vessel a new life and introducing new technologies and techniques, we hope to inspire others to consider their impact on the environment and change behaviour to make maritime heritage and industry more sustainable.
