Public benefits
The benefits flowing from the purpose to advance the arts are: The possibility by individuals or communities to express their cultural identity in a safe and respectful environment; Increased opportunities to foster, and promote individual artistic talent; Increased individual and community confidence in their own cultural and artistic
identity. The benefits flowing from the purpose to advance reconciliation are: Increased individual and community respect for the cultural, religious and historical identity of other communities sharing the same space; Increased knowledge of shared community history (eg: farming, fishing or other community industries); Shared opportunities to deliver their own and/or community "story" with others. The benefits flowing from the advancement of citizenship are: The promotion of a sense of empowerment of civil society; The promotion of inclusion; Increased opportunities for leadership within the community by organising similar events; Increased individual and community self-esteem by participating in public events. The benefits from advancing art are demonstrated by: Participation of increasing numbers of artists in our programmes; Publication of written, audio or video materials; Evaluation as specified by funders. The benefits from advancing reconciliation are demonstrated by: An increased participation in shared events by those from different backgrounds; A willingness of participants to organise and promote reciprocal events; Attitudinal surveys before and after events to determine changes in attitude towards others; Verbal or video feedback from participants and event attendees; Evaluation as specified by funders. The benefits from advancing citizenship are demonstrated by: Organisation of intra- and inter-community events Introducing and bringing on board other like-minded groups Recording (eg: written, audio or video) of shared community history and experience for future generations; Increased opportunities for leadership within the community to organise similar events; Evaluation as specified by funders. There is the potential for harm in that organising meetings of people of different background there is a risk of rising tensions and conflict; we are aware of this and in order to prevent it: 1. we use mutually accessible and acceptable art forms (music, songs, dance, etc.) to create a more relaxed atmosphere, 2. we use very experienced facilitators. The wider cohort of end beneficiaries is ultimately the citizenry of Northern Ireland. Private benefit from advancing art is that gained by professional artists. A few professional artists are paid by AAW during public events, we find their presence necessary for at least 3 reasons: they boost the confidence of amateur artists - who constitute the bulk of the performance-their contribution help defusing some of the tension that may arise from the participants and also they help attracting the audience who will benefit from the whole event. In this way it is necessary to the fulfilment of the purpose of the charity. It is incidental as it is only a small part of the event. Private benefit from advancing reconciliation is that gained by facilitators and professional artists but it is incidental and necessary to the fulfilment of the purpose of the charity. The committee decide that the role of facilitator when dealing with reconciliation is extremely important and that an experienced and skilled person was needed. Such a person needs to be paid. Music is used to reduce tension, again a definite knowledge and experience is needed. However, this is a mean to an end, in this way it is incidental. Private benefit from advancing citizenship is that gained by trainers, caterers and artists but it is incidental and necessary to the fulfilment of the purpose of the charity. In organising workshops, especially for the young, experienced and skilled trainers and facilitators need to be present and remunerated.
