Public benefits

Advancement of education is the primary public benefit, with a range of school curriculum, and adult education and vocational training envisaged as a means of improving levels of formal and informal education in the community. Providing information which increases the knowledge and abilities of those being educated in “ matters relating to the

living world and the environment and general environmental protection.” From awareness raising activities, through school curriculum linked work to practical conservation skills in ‘animal welfare’ and ‘environmental protection or improvement’, we will increase public learning and knowledge about conservation and the environment. Education will engage the public and instil stewardship of the environment and animal care skills. The public benefit will be to make the community better carers of animals and better conservationists of their local environment. It will develop life skills as well as having the wider purpose of adding to the store of useful human knowledge. The inspiration and engagement of the public will develop stewardship into citizenship and involvement in conservation increases interest in the communities which inhabit the natural environment. A greater sense of pride in the place we live will increase personal mental and physical health and well being outcomes. The facility itself will provide a location for a range of activities geared for the entire community but will provide free or subsidised activities which will help those in need. For those who cannot access conventional facilities or activities due to age, health, disability or poverty these facilities will provide relief by means of a free or more affordable facility helping those in financial hardship or poverty. The creation of a neutral community venue where culture and heritage can be studied a safe shared space will provide opportunities for dialogue and sharing which will improve community relations, conflict resolution and reconciliation. Educational benefits demonstrated by participant and user figures or uptake in courses or other activities. We will also audit users/learners on educational development from a baseline ie what have they learnt, or become more aware of. Health and well being benefits shown by those who express higher levels of health or well being after participation, this can be better mode, self worth or indeed the benefits of exercise and physical activity The relief benefits on various categories will be demonstrated by the uptake and use by those self-identifying as being in the various categories. In terms of poverty relief, the provision of free services which would otherwise have to be paid for is a reflex allowing use without expenditure. The advancement of animal welfare evidenced by animals rescued and environmental protection by number of programs run, and the engagement of the public. We have not assessed any harm arising aside from the normal risk assessment of activities which engage the public and can be mitigated or managed. As an inclusive community based group we are open to all. Due to the geographical location we have identified our primary beneficiaries as the residents of the wider Portglenone area. This takes in two counties, and four council areas. We are open to the public and as such we would see the entire population of Northern Ireland and even tourists as potential beneficiaries however programs and work will be focused more locally. Here again we see those most in need as being a priority with disadvantaged and minority groups, or those marginalised due to age, sex, income or other factors. We have identified no private benefit beyond what is incidental and necessary.
