Public benefits

Direct benefits flowing from the purpose includes a growing level of interest in the talks and outings from a wide range of regular supporters from a number of religious backgrounds. A common interest in the educational elements has strengthened a sense of community centred on a desire for greater insight into the heritage, culture and history of

local areas Other benefits include include the ready availability of a rich range of resource material gathered over four decades. In addition to the materials generated by the authors of talks and outings – which are captured in the form of past Journal articles – there are substantial records of the Society’s growth and development which is, in itself, a resource for future research and rare information gathered before the Society was formed and donated to the group for safe keeping The benefits are demonstrated through the enthusiastic support for the topics provided in the annual programme; attendance habitually ranges from 40 to 80 at each event, with whole family groups regularly attending the outings. In addition Journal sales are very encouraging with many editions, with a print run of 350-400, selling out in a relatively short time. The benefits are also demonstrated through the regular requests for information from the Society’s archive. Some sections of the most sought-after elements have been presented as extracts in recent journals in order to improve public access. The trustees have not identified any harm flowing from their purposes The charity's intention is to make its charitable purpose available to all. Many topics chosen for the annual programme attract interest from those who enjoy finding out more about the landscape, social and ecclesiastical history and industrial archaeology of their local area. Presentations by academic archaeologists draw interest from further afield and lectures about the life and work of exceptional people appeal to everyone that has a tenuous connection with the story of these community leaders and unsung heroes. By maintaining a balance of annual activities the Society can ensure that all sections of the public feel welcome. There is no private benefit flowing from the purpose of this charity

What your organisation does

The Dromore Diocesan Historical Society, established in 1977, holds a programme of talks/lectures and outings monthly from February to June each year with an AGM/lecture in September Talks and outings focus on a wide range of topics, such as: significant historical events; personalities; social history; historical geography; and industrial

archaeology, in Diocese of Dromore and its neighbouring areas. Most presentations are based on research material in the public and/or diocesan archives and are delivered at various locations throughout the Diocese by members of the Society and guest speakers. The Society publishes biennially its Journal "Seanchas Dhroim Mór" containing the talks/ lectures of the previous two years and other articles relevant to the aims of the Society. The Society's Facebook presence provides a range of useful information for its members and the wider public. The lecture programme moved onto Zoom in 2020 and continued to provide regular outputs throughout the lockdown periods. This approach has been maintained and the annual programme continues to deliver a small percentage of its content as online talks accessed by local and international followers.
