Public benefits

The benefits of this purpose are that primarily patients in NI at risk of deterioration are more easily identified in a timely manner so that steps may be taken to address this thereby improving their health outcomes. Such early intervention has been recognised as being of benefit by National audits which indicated that many patients have shown

signs of deterioration before collapse. The effectiveness of education in benefiting the health outcomes of patients will be assessed by the use of pre and post teaching questionnaires, along with structured feedback submissions from those receiving training, surveys and assessment by the trainers as to the improved ability of the trainees. Any treatment or procedure carries with it a risk of unintended effects, but by using a recognised international body of peer reviewed teaching, adjusted to local practice by experienced healthcare providers, such hazards should be minimised. Therefore, through shared experience and teaching the benefits outweigh potential harm. Our beneficiaries are the General Public at risk of deterioration in their medical condition to the extent that they would require Critical Care. The private benefits flowing from this purpose are to the necessary suppliers of services in the form of a local public conference centre for educational events, and the suppliers of educational tools used in instruction. Individual instructors are not paid for their services or for travel to any venue used. The trainers may accrue an incidental benefit in that both enhancement of healthcare skills or teaching experience will occur but these are necessary and incidental to the goal of improving the management of the deteriorating patient. The educational benefits to the trainees ensure doctors and nurses are more confident in identifying early signs of deterioration this being necessary to our purpose.

What your organisation does

The Critical Care Support group is a group of experienced healthcare providers from across Northern Ireland who hold teaching events consisting of lectures, tutorials, and skill stations based on recognised teaching material which can be licensed from international Critical Care Societies. The material, adapted for local circumstances, is designed

to help in the recognition of the deteriorating patient and guide inexperienced doctors and nurses in their management in pursuit of an improvement in healthcare.
