Public benefits

The public benefits that flow from prupose (1) are: (i) improvement in mental and physical health, fitness and wellbeing and greater knowledge of the health support services that are available; (ii) enhanced quality of life; (iii) opportunities to acquire and share skills with others; (iv) improvements in the quality of life of the family

members of participants and also of those who benefit from the sale of items of furniture at affordable prices or from the donation of pieces of crafted work. The public benefits that flow from purpose (2) are: (i) oppotunities to engage in activities that: - bring people together to socialise and support each other, helping to reduce isolation and depression - facilitate involvement in creative activities - increase self-awareness, confidence and motivation and lead to an enhanced sense of purpose and fulfilment. (ii) A general improvement in health and wellbeing. The benefits can be identified through feedback from the participants, internal and external evaluations of the work and impact of EDMS, the numbers of participants acquiring new skills and taking part in health related programmes, and research findings that confirm the benefits of participating in Men's Sheds activities. No harm arises from any of these purposes. Men aged from 18 years onwards. There is no private benefit arising from any of the purposes.

What your organisation does

East Down Men's Shed provides facilities, amenities and access to tools and equipment for men aged 18 years and older who live in the Downpatrick District Electoral area and its environs. The participants engage in recycling and upcycling donated furniture and other household items as well as crafting bespoke items. The donated items are then sold

at affordable prices to help people who are in need. Some handcrafted items are donated to local churches and schools. The members of the Shed have the opportunity to socialise, enhance their skills and engage in enjoyable creative and recreational activities. East Down Men's Shed works closely with the Health Team of County Down Rural Community Network.

Charitable purposes

The Charity’s objects (‘the Objects’) are to:- (1) Provide recreational facilities and advance the social needs, health and well-being of men of over eighteen years of age and of all backgrounds living in the East Down area and its environs (the “area of benefit”) by: (a) creating, developing and maintaining a social and workshop space and providing other facilities and amenities so as to help improve men’s health and well-being and reduce isolation; (b) offering opportunities for men to meet and undertake creative, physical, purposeful and recreational activities of their choice; (c) developing the capacity of men to share their skills and knowledge with others; (d) encourage and facilitate involvement in voluntary and community activity. (2) Providing opportunities for those aged 18 or more years to take part in recreational activities, socialise, build self-confidence and engage in creative activity and team work with the object of improving their conditions of life.
