Public benefits

The direct benefits include enabling mental health service users to be able to talk about their issues in a safe and confidential environment with their peers through a range of communication avenues- such as on line forum, phone contact and though meeting in a group. Many mental health service users do experience stigma and discrimination even

within family circles so this support helps to lessen the impact of such factors and peer support is vital to ensure that service users access the most appropriate service for their needs. Coping with major symptoms of mental distress can be very stressful and even at times leading to suicidal thoughts and behaviour so peer support can greatly aid resilience and sustain hope for individuals who are in despair. Research about the quality of life experienced by mental health service users has found that many feel isolated and devalued in their community so our organisation through offering networking can break down this sense of isolation and contribute to improved self esteem and improved mental health for service users. Information and education empowers people by giving people more options and helping in problem solving and thus leading to improved health and life outcomes Our organisation promotes a service user perspective in engaging with all main professions involved in delivery of mental health services and has members actively taking part in training days, study days and conferences. We have members who are actively involved in Groups who are monitoring the implementation of the recommendations of the Bamford Review such as the Mental Health Task Force and Bamford Monitoring Group (2.2). Their involvement is helping to develop more responsive and more accessible mental health services so that there are better health and quality of life outcomes for all those accessing services. These benefits (2.1) can be demonstrated by several means- evaluation of the benefits of our service through a quality of life survey, completed when people become members and at six month intervals and verbal or written feedback from our membership on an ongoing basis. These benefits (2.2) are regularly demonstrated by very positive verbal feedback from all the organisations in which we have been involved in training and educational events. We are not aware of any harm arising from any of the purposes Beneficiaries: men and women aged 18 plus who have mental health issues We do not consider that there is any private benefit flowing from any of the purposes
