Public benefits

The direct benefits flowing from the Society's purposes include access to safe and appropriate housing leading to an alleviation of stress and anxiety on individuals and families and the promotion of family life. These benefits can be demonstrated through feedback from beneficiaries, their care givers and families. The purpose does not lead to

any harm. The beneficiaries are retired Methodist Ministers and their widow or widowers who satisfy the Society’s eligibility rules. A private benefit may arise for some successful applicants who take an equity stake in the property. However when the property is no longer required, for example, upon death or nursing care, the property is then sold and proceeds divided according to the equity stake held by each party. The proceeds are then utilised for the charitable purposes in providing accommodation to other successful applicants. During the period of occupancy all tenants pay a monthly rent (reviewed annually) whether equity sharing or not. This private benefit is incidental and necessary to continue to achieve the Society’s charitable purposes.
