Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include: provision of information, signposting and support to members and ex-members of the Armed Forces and their families to relieve poverty and distress, reduce the levels of social isolation, stress and anxiety, improve health and wellbeing and a diminished sense of isolation, stress and anxiety.

Other benefits include increase contact and engagement with family, friends and the community and a greater access to education and training opportunities that enables veterans to settle into civilian life and integrate into society. Another benefit is an increase in circumstances and opportunities for beneficiaries to access recreational facilities in a safe and welcoming environment. The benefits provided by the group’s activities are demonstrated through feedback from beneficiaries and attendees at our events and activities using: evaluation forms, surveys, verbal feedback, and evaluation of our activities. It is also demonstrated by a reduction in financial and economic deprivation for beneficiaries. There is no harm arising from any of the purposes. The beneficiaries are former members of the Armed Forces and their families, dependants and carers, these tend to be older people, both men and women who can be at increased risk of poverty, discrimination and mental-ill health. There is no private benefit to any individual.

What your organisation does

Comrades Support Group (Dungannon) provides support to ex-members of the Ulster Defence Regiment and their families via provision and signposting to relevant services and information to relieve poverty. The group regularly arranges trips, outings, events, social and networking opportunities, and provides a meeting space and facilities to promote

social interaction, recreation and other leisure time activities with the object of improving conditions of life for participants. The group can also arrange training and information sessions to meet the needs of group members as they arise.

Charitable purposes

The group is established to prevent or relieve poverty and to promote the health and wellbeing of veterans and serving members of the armed forces and their families, dependents and carers (hereinafter called the "beneficiaries") resident in Northern Ireland (hereinafter called the "area of benefit") and in particular: (a) to relieve need, hardship and distress amongst the beneficiaries and their families through the provision of welfare advice and social activities with the aim of providing effective resettlement into civilian society; (b) to advance the education of the beneficiaries and their families to support them to re-establish themselves in civil life, including the provision of training and educational opportunities, assistance in finding suitable employment and advice on welfare benefits; (c) to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and other leisure occupations with the object of improving conditions of life for such families.
