Public benefits
We reduce carer isolation and provide support and guidance so that older carers can care for their loved-ones for longer. This provides direct benefit for the carers through peer-group support so that they feel more self-reliant and emotionally secure. Their cared-for individuals have a better life and more is contributed to the community in
which they live. It also has very significant benefit for the social care budget since care emergencies and breakdowns impose considerable additional costs. We assess outcomes of activities through application of e.g. GHQ 18 and other relevant questionnaires. We also assess improved caring reliability and effectiveness through carer-expressed perceptions of gain in group discussions and activities. None Our support and guidance is provided to members and non-members all of whom are carers over age 60 years and who care in the community for loved-ones who have learning disability. autism or acquired brain injury. Non-members have 'taster' sessions and they can continue to benefit by joining COSYSET. All benefits accrue to members. There are no private benefits to Trustees. There is considerable benefit to the cared-for, through improved carer effectiveness and longevity and great benefit to the public purse in social care cost-saving
What your organisation does
Our Organisation's key aim is to provide whatever help and support we can to our Members, in order that the care they provide for their loved-ones, who cannot manage themselves, is the best possible. We directly address the isolation and vulnerability that older carers experience but which they often appear powerless to amend. These attributes
are most severe in the case of older carers who care for loved-ones with learning difficulties or other mental issues, since these conditions are still seen as stigmatic by the general population. We organise group discussions and activities, to reduce isolation and help carers feel part of a community to improve their awareness of what is available to help them in their role, so that they become more effective and recognise that they can have a life as well as being a carer. If we can help to achieve this then they will be able to continue their caring role for longer, for the benefit of their loved ones, for themselves, for the public purse and for the community in general.
