What your organisation does
TheatreofplucK advocates for the equality and rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Northern Ireland, and we produce work that represents this minority community to a wider ‘mainstream’ audience. We endeavour to challenge preconceptions of and discrimination towards the LGBT community through our performance output as
well as our training and educational outreach. TheatreofplucK produces theatre and events in Northern Ireland using the skills and knowledge of our central artistic team to deliver a programme of work that is demonstrative of the cultural and sectoral diversity of Northern Ireland. We provide support to other theatre companies and practitioners at our headquarters The Barracks, allowing these organisations the crucial resources of time and space to research and develop their work in an open and non-judgmental environment. TheatreofplucK invites artists and practitioners working in other artistic forms to collaborate on suitable projects, sharing skills and ideas across media to further advance the knowledge and training of the participants and to widen their performance styles and abilities. We commission writers and artists to create new work or adaptations from pre-existing material, providing support from the earliest stimulus through to the conclusion for the public. We provide a safe working environment for persons from the Queer and LGBT community who seek to develop their skills and practice at The Barracks studio. We actively participate in global academic and practical discourse, demonstrating changing perspectives in Northern Ireland and cementing our place as a creative and cultural landmark within the worldwide community. TheatreofplucK produces its performances for wider public consumption, performing in festivals and in public venues that are accessible to all. We advertise and promote our projects to everyone, seeking to attract new audiences to discover theatre that celebrates diversity and equality.
