Public benefits
The Group is established to promote play based learning environments for all children in their pre-school year and out of school care (hereinafter referred to as the beneficiaries) of the area served in and around Portrush, Portstewart, Coleraine and other towns in the surrounding environs in Counties Antrim and Londonderry (hereinafter called the
“area of benefit”) without distinction of age, gender, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnic identity, political or religious opinion, by associating the statutory authorities, community and voluntary organisations and the inhabitants in a common effort to advance education, and in particular: a. to advance the education of the beneficiaries by the provision of safe and satisfying group play, with the right of parents/carers to take responsibility for and to become involved in the activities of the group; and to promote the preservation of health of the beneficiaries; and b. to support the values and principles of Early Years. The direct benefits which flow from the purpose include advancement of education for children in the area of benefit in a pre-school context and also through out of school care for children in a safe and structured environment that promotes educational advancement, health and well being. This includes (i) enhanced knowledge and understanding for children, (ii) preparation to attend primary school, (iii) the opportunity to participate in activities after school such as sports, crafts and languages that do not form part of the usual school curriculum, and (iv) out of school care in a safe and structured environment. MSCC provides this benefit in the context of an 'integrated' environment that promotes harmony, equality and diversity. All sections of the traditional and non-traditional Northern Irish community are welcome at MSCC. The Early Years Values set out in the MSCC Constitution are • Early Childhood in its own right, as well as being the foundation for later life. • Play as the primary vehicle to promote the development of young children. • A culture of listening to children. • Parents/carers as first educators. • Inclusion through diversity and respect for others. • Support, education and development opportunities for families. • Quality and innovation in early years care and education. • The professionalism and commitment of all staff and volunteers working with young children. These values are promoted in the pre-school context of MSCC. A positive pre-school year gives children the confidence and the skills required to approach future learning experiences with ease and enthusiasm. The benefits are evidenced through feedback from parents and children and through inspections from the relevant social services body. The beneficiaries are the children in Coleraine, Portrush and Portstewart areas and surrounding towns, generally within the Causeway Coast and Glens Council area. There is no harm that flows from the purpose and the only private benefit flowing form the purpose is the experience gained by staff and volunteers working for MSCC which could be used to advance career opportunities.
What your organisation does
The MSCC pre-school function provides pre-school education to children in a safe and structured environment that is subject to inspection by social services. The pre-school leader is a qualified teacher with many years’ experience in early year’s education; she is supported by appropriately qualified staff. All staff attend regular courses to keep
their knowledge up to date. They also have a wide range of other life experiences, which gives them a mature and well-rounded approach to childcare. Our partnership with parents is vital to the success of the pre-school. Parents are always welcome to spend time in the pre-school as volunteers. All parents of children in the pre-school are actively encouraged to become members of Mill Strand Children’s Centre and to support the work of the Centre by serving on the Committee. The out of school care includes activities and sports supervised by appropriately qualified staff that enhance the life experience of children. This includes care after school hours during term time and also during school holidays. All MSCC activities are provided in the context of the policies held and applied by MSCC.
