Purpose 4 “To promote the accessibility of drama and theatre for people with disabilities in general and to educate the general public about the creative and artistic abilities of people with disabilities.” The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are the increased opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in drama and theatre and the increased awareness amongst the general public of the creative and artistic talent that is latent and rarely seen or encouraged in people with disabilities. What your organisation does

Stage Beyond is theatre company for young adults with learning disabilities based in the Derry and owned and controlled by people with learning disabilities. The organisation was formed to address the lack of arts provision for those with learning disabilities. Young people with learning disabilities have limited access to high quality

theatre-in-education training. We offer professional training in a wide variety of arts disciplines, but mainly theatre and the performing arts. Company members are recruited and auditioned in a workshop situation. They become members through their talent and through their own personal commitment to the arts. Members must demonstrate an aptitude and a willingness to commit to the work. We rehearse and devise two days per week for our annual show which we tour and for smaller performance pieces. We carry out theatre in education outreach work on the other days of the week. The company’s main focus is on professional arts training. This is delivered by some of the leading arts professionals in Northern Ireland. We provide performance and community based workshops thereby giving a voice to the learning disabled community. Stage Beyond provides a platform for that voice to be heard locally and nationally. Our company lays secure foundations for young people with learning disabilities to participate fully in an arts context thereby helping them to shape their own cultural environment. The project is the first of its kind in Northern Ireland, a company which also portrays sensitive work about issues such as relationships, sexuality, coming of age and independence. It also offers its members the opportunity to benefit from sustained training in a wide range of theatre disciplines, as well as offering audiences the chance to see and engage with theatre created by people with learning disabilities.
