Public benefits
Purpose: Promote public appreciation and knowledge in the art of Urban Music by any exclusively charitable means. Benefit 1: The public would benefit from the opportunity to explore / enjoy a new art form. Who is the benefit for? This benefit is for the public of Northern Ireland. Demonstration: Soburban has already hosted four urban music
showcases between last December and now (October 2016), and these have been enjoyed by hundreds of attendees. Soburban has identified courses with the Prince’s Trust which would enable these youths to gain qualifications/experience in music, radio, and DJing. Benefit 2: Deprived young urban musicians in the Northern Irish public will benefit from the opportunity to gain experience, which will in turn help them to pursue these music careers. Who is the benefit for? This benefit is for musicians / potential musicians in Northern Ireland. Demonstration: All of the young artistes who work with Soburban have had experience partaking in 3 of our showcases. They have all given feedback that this has boosted their confidence regards performing. They continue to look forward to future showcases, to have the opportunity to perform at them. Benefit 3: Deprived young urban musicians in the Northern Irish public, who are unsure of the way forward in music, will benefit from guidance and a support group. Who is the benefit for? This benefit is for musicians / potential musicians in Northern Ireland. Demonstration: All of the young artistes who work with Soburban have expressed that they, as a result of being advised by our in-house musicians, are now clearer in the style of music they want to specialise in, and on how they will go about pursuing careers as musicians. Private Benefit: The young artists Soburban works with will privately benefit with careers in music. This is offset by the public benefit of generating more employment and the advancement of the urban music art-form. In the four showcases already hosted, Soburban has not collected any fees from beneficiaries and plan on keeping this a free service for young artistes. Revenues collected from attendees at showcases are used solely to offset costs of showcases. So far there has never been a surplus in revenue versus cost and all expenses are covered out of pocket by the co-founders of Soburban. Any surplus in the future will be used to finance future events. Harm: The disappointment of not making it as artists could be harmful to artists. This will be offset by Soburban managing expectations and endeavouring to find the best opportunities possible for artists’ skillsets. A lack of interest in showcases organised can be harmful to artists’ development, but this will be offset by the necessary marketing being done for showcases, and the continued growing of Soburban artists’ profiles. A lack of available funding from private and public funds could adversely affect Soburban’s ability to operate as planned, and may have knock on effect of frustrating the progress of the artistes we work with.
What your organisation does
Soburban shall do the following: 1) Create a platform for deprived youths in Northern Ireland, aspiring to pursue careers in urban music, to express their music, and share their culture with their communities. This shall be done through Soburban continuing to host talent showcases, working with youths to formulate workshops to carry out in schools
and other community organisations, and hosting events at which these youths Soburban works with can perform their art form, gaining exposure and credibility as performing artistes. This platform does not currently exist for this unique demographic, so Soburban will create it. 2) Create at least part time careers in music for deprived youths in Northern Ireland, aspiring for careers in urban music. These careers will be in the form of performing at our events, approaching other event promoters about giving them like opportunities, training them to become DJs to play at our events and others, and approaching record labels across the United Kingdom and Ireland about the possibilities of working with these youths. 3) Mentor deprived youths in Northern Ireland, aspiring to pursue careers in urban music. Soburban is founded by Afro Caribbean and Northern Irish professionals who can impart a lot to these youths of all backgrounds, not only regards making it in music, but in life in general. 4) Promote Afro Caribbean music in Northern Ireland so that the people from these backgrounds, the youth in particular, can feel a greater sense of belonging and acceptance.
