Public benefits

The Disability Equality Group (DEGNI) meets the public benefit requirement as they operate to benefit the public by increasing awareness and understanding of the different forms of disability in society. Members of the group benefit socially and mentally through active engagement, reducing social isolation and increasing confidence levels. Members

feel confident when they are together and their disabilities do not affected any interactions – they have ensured that all members have fair and equal access to information etc. Members experience a direct benefit through this engagement at activities, social outings etc. The local community indirectly benefit as a result of DEGNI’s production of a newsletter distributed throughout the local area. DEGNI are also represented on the local Housing Community Network and Inter Agency meetings were they bring forward issues happening within the local area. DEGNI support the local community by increasing their understanding of disabilities and the different forms of disabilities within the community. The group have designed an OCN Accredited Disability Awareness course in which they deliver to people with no disabilities. The training is a bottom up approach delivered by the DEGNI members themselves. DEGNI work for the wider benefit of the community and surrounding area by increasing awareness and acceptability of those with disabilities. DEGNI promotes equality of opportunity between people as per the Northern Ireland Act 1998 section 75 based on the following nine characteristics; 1. Age 2. Having or not having a disability 3. Gender 4. Marital status 5. Religion 6. Political opinion 7. Ethnicity 8. Sexual orientation 9. Having or not having dependents

What your organisation does

The groups Mission Statement is "to work positively for people with disabilities" and our Vision Statement is "Raised awareness, equality and positive opportunities for change". The DEGNI group formed as a result of a Human Rights Course attended by members who came together with an aim to enhance the quality of life for all people with

disabilities by ensuring that local and statutory authorities abide to current legislation an awareness of the needs of the disabled when reviewing current legislation. To date our group have been successful in lobbying Altnagelvin Hospital to create a further 12 disabled parking spaces. Our group have a dedicated research and policy officer with a particular focus on aviation, good practise in transport and young people in transition. Our group are also responsible for facilitating Disability Awareness Training in schools and to community groups, this training aims to raise awareness in the community of Disabilities and the challenges the disabled community face and dispel common stereotypes held in the community. More recently, DEGNI have developed OCN Accredited Disability Awareness training to be rolled out across the North by the group members themselves. DEGNI members also attend local Intergency meetings , Housing Community Network meetings, Tenant Scrutiny panel meetings, Disability Forums etc DEGNI are also affiliated with the Law Society

Charitable purposes

The Group is established to promote the benefit of people with disabilities in N.I. (hereinafter called the “area of benefit”) without distinction of age, gender, sexuality, nationality, ethnic origin, political or religious opinion, by the provision of facilities in the interests of social welfare, for recreation or other leisure time occupation of such people with disabilities, with the object of improving their conditions of life.
