Public benefits

Promote the benefit of the inhabitants of Knockmore Estate, Lisburn (hereinafter described as "the area of benefit") without distinction of age, gender, race, political, religious or other opinion. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the provision of the activities and events for the wider community, resulting in reduced

isolation. For example, the Association annually organise a community festival which brings the whole community together, developing a greater sense of belonging for all. Pensioners’ activities throughout the year include a breakfast/luncheon club, as well as various social events, allowing relationships to develop. Speakers are also invited along to events to provide more information to pensioners. For example, the PSNI have previously given a talk on safety in the home/community. Such talks have helped reduce anxiety, and develop confidence. By associating the statutory authorities, voluntary organisations and inhabitants in a common effort to advance education. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include increased skills, knowledge and experience within the estate resulting in a more confident community. The Association has provided a number of training courses over the years, increasing knowledge and understanding in a variety of issues. Most recently the Association has provided first aid training. Through funding, the Association has recently secured a new computer suite in the community house. It is hoped the suite will be used to further develop IT skills, assist in improving adult literacy and be used to encourage young people to develop their IT skills further. To provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation or other leisure-time occupation, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include a more engaged and responsive community, with greater access to information. The Association currently operates from two community flats in the Knockmore estate. These premises offer a venue to hold drop in or surgery style events, for example with the housing executive or the chemist. As Knockmore is located on the outskirts of Lisburn, such events not only provide an opportunity to respond to residents needs and provide increased information, they also enable easier access to such services. The Association also provide signposting as required. Working with the PSNI, the Association has also enabled the building of relationships between officers and the community. ASB and crime are ongoing issues within the estate and it is hoped as a result of positive relationships, the community will be encouraged to report issues to the police, so as to reduce ASB and crime rates. The Association also strives to make the estate more welcoming and planters have recently been sourced. None of the purposes listed above give rise to any harm and all of the beneficiaries live within the area of benefit.

What your organisation does

Knockmore Community Association leases two community flats which provide drop in facilities for the local community, and are a venue for community led activities. We have a pensioners’ breakfast/ luncheon club which meets weekly. They take part in various social events such as bingo and trips. We work with the young people on art projects such

as memory boxes, picture framing, silk painting etc. We hope to be able display upcoming work at a venue in Central Lisburn for the wider community to see. We host a monthly housing surgery and are hoping to work with other bodies. We secure funding for activities and events, running an annual community festival, as well as seasonal events throughout the year. We are planning to start a community newsletter. We take part in Good Practice Visits. We hold and attend various meetings with statutory bodies such as the Housing Executive and use such meetings to raise issues or concerns of the local community.
