What your organisation does

Ógras is an Irish language youth work organisation that works with young people aged 8-26 years of age. Ógras offers young people the opportunity to avail of social and cultural activities through the medium of Irish. It enriches lives from a cultural and social perspective, promotes good inter-personal skills and helps build confidence by giving

young people a wide range of experiences to promote personal development. Ógras crucially gives a young person the opportunity to develop a relationship/understanding of the Irish culture and language in a way that is age appropriate and meaningful as well as the opportunity to forge links with other young people from other parts of the country or abroad. Ógras clubs form strong links with the community in which they operate - the organisation relies heavily on local volunteer leaders which are trained and vetted by Ógras. The benefits to the community can vary depending on the age and size of the membership but in general the young people develop a sense of pride in their own community through the various activities and projects organised by the clubs. The community also benefits from having a growing number of young people who are developing social and personal skills that will benefit them in numerous ways throughout their lives. By participating in the club activities the young people and leaders develop skills and experiences that help foster a culture of co-operation and understanding which benefits all members of the community. Ogras also provides a forum for other real and pressing issues relating to personal/social and health development that effect the lives of young people such as: Bullying, Self esteem and Resilience in young people; Peer Pressure; Drugs and Alcohol; Health; Relationship and Social Skills. Many of our clubs participate in projects that specifically benefit their communities and the public in general eg Spring Clean-Up; One World Week; Multi-Cultural events; Language and culture workshops etc.
