Public benefits
The benefits that flow as a result of the organisation are to increase the visibility of fishing communities within Northern Ireland society and to help preserve and maintain the way of life in these communities and especially to promote and support the role of women. We provide seafood demonstrations and presentations at a range of community
groups across Northern Ireland bringing people together and in turn promoting the work of the community groups we attend. Through listening to the presentations, people leave with a real sense of what life is like in local fishing communities and they learn how to include more seafood in their diets for improved health. We have provided free demontrations to over 700 people in the 24 months with attendance at a further 14 events planned in the coming year. The benefits that flow from our work are: • Better knowledge of fishing communities in Northern Ireland and especially the role of women in those communities; • Better knowledge of seafood cookery skills to allow increased consumption of seafood for improved health; • An activity for community groups to avail of to improve their fundraising potential. These benefits can be demonstrated by the letters and testimonials we have received from the groups we have attended. The beneficiaries are the fishing communities through better knowledge of their history and culture throughout Northern Ireland; the seafood industry as we hope to increase local consumption of seafood and the community groups we attend as our presentations increase attendance at these groups. There is no potential harm as a result of our work. We sell a small quantity of seafood at our demonstrations to cover the costs of NIWIF members driving to and from the events. In summary NIWIF provide the following benefits: • Enhanced knowledge and understanding of the fishing and aquaculture industries in Northern Ireland and their economic and social importance within rural fishing communities; • Improved knowledge within the general public of the benefits of including more seafood in the diet; • Increased understanding of the importance of the role of women within fishing communities; • We provide a support network for women of all ages from fishing communities.
What your organisation does
Our organisation supports women involved in the fishing industry by being available to help in any problems arising from all aspects of the industry. We go to different groups across Northern Ireland and in cross border areas doing fish presentations - cooking fish, giving samples of the cooked fish, informing of the best places to buy locally
caught fresh fish and telling of the nutritional value of eating fish and how it can benefit our health. • Complement the activities of existing community and voluntary groups across Northern Ireland by attending and presenting information on the local fishing and aquaculture industries alongside fish cookery demonstrations at events and meetings. • We promote the local seafood industry and seafood through the events we attend; • We encourage the consumption of seafood for improved health; • We hold monthly Northern Ireland Women in Fisheries meetings where support and friendship is extended to all women in fishing communities who wish to attend.
