Public benefits

Purpose 1 The advancement of education. The direct benefits which flow from the purpose include allowing parents the ease of access to services for deaf children and young people within their locality. We meet the purpose by allowing deaf children and young people from birth to the age of 19 the opportunity to participate in activities,

educational programmes which they might not normally have the opportunity to do, including socialising with children of similar disabilities. We offer a support and advice network for parents of deaf children from the time of diagnosis through to school leaving age. This can be over the phone or in person offering support and knowledge from other parents who have already been through similar circumstances. We would source local speakers to address parent concerns and offer them contacts with other parents who might have already been through similar circumstances. For example, to support families we offer family British Sign Language courses which helps to educate and support families in how to communicate with their child effectively. We also educate families on their children's technologies. We work with statutory and voluntary agencies to ensure we provide all learning opportunities to parents and children regarding courses and activities outside our group, for example we have have speakers from the Education Board, audiology and Citizens Advice Bureau. Our family activities have included pre-schooler swimming lessons, trampolining and trips to the Pantomime. The majority of our children are in mainstream schools and do not have the opportunity to mix with other deaf children. Our group helps promote self-esteem and self-awareness so the children have the confidence in their own abilities. We achieve this by encouraging the children to spend time together at our family days. Our group encourages our children to bring friends to activities, allowing the community at large to start becoming more deaf aware. We use social media to promote our group to attract new members and keep the group sustainable, regardless of sex, religion, age and additional needs. For example from our website we can indirectly education people about deafness and support in their local area because of the information we relay. This purpose does not give rise to any harm. The beneficiaries of this purpose are deaf children and their families in the Ards and North Down area. A private benefit flowing from this purpose is that gained by a Trustee who has a child in the group. This benefit is incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. Purpose 2 The relief of those in need by reason of youth, age, ill health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage.
