Public benefits

Public Benefit By building stronger communities and enabling people to be kind to one another, the Borough of Sanctuary is also encouraging values of equality, freedom and social justice. We build strong and welcoming communities through our purpose of educating the general public about issues relating to refugees and those seeking asylum. We

also promote education and training to asylum seekers and those granted refugee status so that they can adapt to their new life within our community. These values are underpinned by the concept of equality, good relations and diversity, which concerns itself with ensuring that people are not excluded by others from participating in the activities of society, such as education and employment, because of certain characteristics that make up their identity. We meet this aim by working through the first object in our constitution by organizing events, awareness raising activities and training. The public benefit that flows from our purposes is that we are committed to building a culture of hospitality and welcome, especially for refugees seeking sanctuary from war and persecution and this culture of welcome will extend across every sphere of society in our Borough. Wherever refugees, ethnic migrants and other marginalised groups go, we want them to feel safe and find people who will welcome them. Private Benefit The private benefit that occurs as a result of delivering the public benefits outlined above is that, from time to time, we may have to pay, for example, a facilitator; or use resources to buy materials from public suppliers or provide subsistence or travel to our volunteers and private gain will occur, however without using funding or resources in this way we could not attain the intended public benefit of our objectives. No conflict of interest arises through this process as we ensure that our trustees work to a high level of good practice in terms of finance, recruitment and procurement processes and always declare an interest where appropriate. All procurement is at an appropriate level of recompense and we have specific procedures in place for everyone to follow. Without purchasing some services we could not deliver on the public benefits outlined above but our trustees have a high level of awareness of the issues that can arise and always act according to the high standards expected of their position. Beneficiaries Our beneficiaries are people of all ages, faiths, background and identity who are migrant workers and asylum seekers and also locally marginalised groups and individuals. Other beneficiaries include the men and women of all ages who volunteer with our organisation and also the citizens of the borough of Causeway and surrounding areas. Proving the Benefit How we prove our benefit is through record keeping of those who attend our coaching sessions, volunteer in our various activities and attend our social and youth events. We provide newsletters and flyers, utilise the local press for publicity and take photographs and also collect monitoring information when we access public funds for our activities. We also chart the progression of our young people through the inter-club competitions we arrange and also the showcases, exhibitions and sporting competitions they compete in. Harm Reduction The possibility of harm, for example by physical injury incurred by participation in our training and events is minimal and significantly reduced by the policies and procedures in place to address such risks, for example safeguarding and child and vulnerable adult protection policy, health and safety policy, code of conduct for staff and volunteers. We also minimise potential harm through issues including racism and hate crime through the education programmes and awareness raising activities reflected in our objects.

What your organisation does

The benefit which flows from supporting marginalised citizens and working in partnership with a range of local, statutory, community and voluntary agencies in the Borough is that we are ensuring community needs are being met through a process of listening and acting on the concerns raised. For example we have been working with local faith leaders,

local schools and are developing links with the local University of Ulster. This approach also ensures that the services provided are at a grass roots level. The added value of working in partnership minimises duplication of services, programmes and projects ensuring quality, transparency and an integral approach to service provision. When a number of groups in this area pledge their commitment to the principles of 'sanctuary and a culture of welcome,' we can apply to the UK City of Sanctuary movement at www.cityofsanctuary.org for recognition as an official 'Borough of Sanctuary'. How we prove our benefit is through record keeping of those who attend our workshop sessions, volunteer in our various activities and attend our social and community events. We provide newsletters and flyers, utilise the local press for publicity and take photographs and also collect monitoring information when we access public funds for our activities.
