Public benefits

The primary purpose of the Ballymena Garden Club is to promote education and good practice in horticulture in Ballymena and the surrounding area. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include: • enhancement of the individual’s horticultural knowledge and capabilities • encouragement to raise their standard of horticulture and to be

competitive • raising awareness of the environmental impact of their gardening activities and to encourage them to garden in sympathy with nature • promotion of a healthy physical and mental lifestyle These benefits can be demonstrated by feedback from members following lectures, demonstrations, garden visits and flower shows. Feedback from the general public following flower shows and other public events at which the Club is represented is positive. In handling plants and garden chemicals there is a slight risk of harm but the more harmful chemicals are not now available to the general public, therefore the benefits far outweigh the harm. The benefits gained by garden visits outweigh the possibility of any harm. The beneficiaries are members of the Club and their friends together with members of the general public who attend, read or hear about the Club’s public events such as flower shows and public lectures. There is no private benefit to trustees flowing from this purpose. A secondary purpose of Ballymena Garden Club is to provide facilities in Ballymena and the surrounding district to individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, financial hardship or social circumstances with the object of improving their conditions of life. As a Club whose members and friends are approaching retirement or have retired, age related health issues such as mobility problems have to be addressed. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose for those it impacts include: • potential improvement of the individual’s physical and mental wellbeing • enhancement of the individual’s social life • enablement of individuals to avail of the benefits flowing from the primary purpose of the Club These benefits can be demonstrated by the positive feedback from affected individuals and their friends. Any harm involved is minimised by the careful selection of venues including meeting rooms and gardens visited to ensure that they are suited to the needs of the majority of the affected individuals. If on a rare occasion a venue may not be suitable for an affected person, that person will be informed. The beneficiaries are the affected individuals who participate in the Club’s activities. There is no private benefit flowing from this purpose.
