Public benefits
The direct benefits that flow from this purpose is the provision of the only community entity on this side of the peace line. It instills a sense of caring about this impoverished and overlooked pocket of deprivation which does not have a statutory youth facility or community centre in the area. The benefits are evidenced through the drop in
the crime rate break ins, paramilitary punishment shooting/ beatings etc, and the apathy which was very evident as the community (prior to our projects inception) had nowhere to go to for help or assistance. The improved confidence and modern housing instills a slowly developing sense of importance. Our services presently provide the unemployed with information on job vacancies and assistance in the compilation of C.V.s, and in addition, a listening and sign posting service. We can also arrange house visits to ensure that no one is overlooked. In 19 years provision we have never had an insurance claim and no one has been injured in our unit. From the twice weekly service which we currently provide, there is absolutely no private or personal benefit. Our client group is the community of Roden Street, which has high dependency on welfare benefits, and experiences high unemployment
What your organisation does
Our organistation carries out community development projects. We operate twice weekly in Amber House and provide (if required) also home visits. Tuesdays: ( a ) We provide in liaison with Conor Building job centre, notice boards of all up to date job vacancies. In tandem with this we also provide support to apply for vacancies for youth who
do not have confidence to apply. ( b ) We can provide (free of charge) basic training on the use of our computer systems /internet etc. ( c ) We can provide (free of charge) stationery to compile CV s and letters of application for jobs, training, further education etc. Thursdays: ( a ) Home visits to any distressed members of the community due to any interface issues or unease ( If requested). Our overall purpose is to see community development continue and the new residents feel part of this community. ( b ) Listening service (confidentially assured) about needs, help, support that would empower the individual or family to improve their life style or apply for housing in the vicinity. ( c ) Sign posting per se: There is a low educational attainment in this interface area with very few teenagers going on to grammar schools or further education. Teenage boys in particular seem to lack behind in educational qualifications when setting out into the “World of Work”. We do our up most to instill confidence in anyone who seeks our support and “ Hand Hold” until they are able to: ( i ) Apply for vacancies . ( ii ) Identify training needed or further education. We also encourage the users of Amber House to get involved in volunteering we have always had a good working relationship with Voluntary Services Belfast now known as Volunteer Now organisation.
