Public benefits

Public Benefit Statement: For the public benefit, the relief and assistance of young people both male and female, and those with disability in need within the West Belfast constituency (with travel to locations within Northern Ireland and Ireland) who are living within socially deprived areas facing financial hardship (the beneficiaries). The

charity’s purpose is to provide young people with a means of escape from financial hardship, and expression through the provision of facilities to learn, and promote the disciplined sport of amateur boxing. This amateur sport supports the advancement of physical and mental health and education of young people. The direct benefits that flow from the charity’s purpose are reduced levels of stress and anxiety, increased interaction with a wider range of individuals, and reducing the temptation of anti-social behaviour by providing young people with the opportunity to partake in a purposeful activity. These benefits can be demonstrated through feedback from members. SportNI (2005) also states that social classes D and E have the lowest level of sport participation, this facility provides a means to include these individuals and encourage involvement. The reduction of anti-social behaviour can be supported by Department of Culture, Media and Sport (1999), Cabinet Office (2002) and SportNI (2005) as sport contributes to deter individuals from anti-social behaviour and/or crime, and rehabilitate previous offenders. Sport NI (2014) continues to state that the provision of sport contributes positively to the achievement of public health outcomes to increase physical activity, and raise awareness of mental health. Partaking in the competitive aspect of amateur boxing is unpredictable and may lead to harm such as; injury. However, we can show that this harm is outweighed by the health and social benefits of the sport. Ensuring that adequate training and preparation to minimise this occurrence is completed, and good judgement of all coaches to make the final decision on an individual’s inclusion within boxing tournaments occurs. The only private benefit flowing from this purpose is that public interest within the area may increase which may benefit local hospitality providers. This is incidental and necessary because advertisment of the new facility and sport is required to attract new members and raise public awareness of the facility.

What your organisation does

Our organisation enhances the existing programmes and activities which are ongoing, and provide the community and club the ability to provide fitness and well being with good quality equipment. Encourage physical activity and help develop social skills, team-working and sporting skills we instil self-worth into young people who are from socially

deprived areas of west Belfast. Our aim is to get more after-school kids to keep them from engaging in anti-social behaviour in the community.
