Public benefits
The trustees believe that our purpose satisfies both elements of the Public Benefit Requirement: to provide and maintain a safe and stimulating environment for preschool children aged 3 to 4 years old, living in the Derry/Londonderry area. The direct benefits which flow from the purpose include improved health and safety, self-esteem, equality and
self-confidence for children. These benefits are evidenced through the consistent numbers of children attending the playgroup. the feedback from parents or guardians attending outings and the feedback from annual meetings with the staff and the endorsement from WELB inspectors. In providing this service to children there is a risk of minor accidents, i.e children falling through dance and exercise or in play activities through spillages. Before outings or trips are organised, St Bernadette's staff do a risk assessment of the area prior to the outing. St Bernadette's are members of the Early years organisation, ensuring professional support at all times. The strict controls the WELB place on our health and safety procedures, the regularly updated qualifications our staff have i.e first aid and child protection courses and our attention to the strict guidelines laid down by the Department to Education far outweigh the risk. All our resources and equipment are within the BSEN safety standards also. The beneficiaries of this purpose are pre school children aged 3 to 4 years living in the Derry/Londonderry area. There is no private benefit flowing from this purpose.
What your organisation does
The playgroup caters for its beneficiaries by providing: a. seasonal outings to various locations depending on the season, for example in the summer the children would be taken on a trip to the beach. b. Dance, song and drama putting on concerts or nativity plays…Outdoor play sessions on a daily basis, weather permitting, encouraging physical
activity, an environmental garden offering the children the opportunity to grow their own fruit and herbs and learn about insects and nature. Healthy eating events where the children enjoy healthy snacks and cookery lessons. The children are encouraged to get involved in healthy eating awards. Dental and personal care on a daily basis is provided with the children receiving their own tooth brush and toothpaste. Primary school links with the children attending events at the local school. Yearly events including sports day where children all get a certificate and Christmas celebrations were all get involved in the nativity play for parents and grandparents. A graduation ceremony at the end of the year where the children are pictured with in their gown and certificate. An annual open day for prospective new children to the playgroup. A play area with wall displays with different themes. These are the practical ways in which the organisation underpins the six curriculum guidelines laid down by the Dept. of Education and social Services.
