Public benefits

Purpose 1: The relief of those in need. Shade of Hope seeks to provide clothing, bedding and shelter to those in need due to their adverse circumstances. We seek to do this by building new housing where funds allow, supplying and distributing clothing and bedding and providing basic medical care to those who do not have the resources nor support

to provide the basic essentials required to live free from want in the area of operation. This improves the quality of life of those who are recipients of this support. There is no private benefit. Purpose 2 The Advancement of Education: Shades of Hope seeks to advance education among those unable to avail of education due to their adverse circumstance. We seek to do this through our child sponsorship programme where children within the area of operation are sponsored by regular financial support which provides first, second and third level education so that the children and young people may benefit from broader opportunities and so improve their personal circumstance and those of their families. Boarding facilities are provided for those living too far away to have access to school. Benefits have been clearly demonstrated by the number of children progressing through primary school and on to secondary school with young people advancing to take degree courses at Kampala University. We further seek to support local schools by providing books, materials and equipment which could not otherwise be afforded. This programme benefits the children and young people themselves by providing employment opportunities and hope for the future which they would not otherwise have. It provides the resource to allow them to leave the streets and the slum areas by helping providing for themselves and their families and giving them the opportunity to contribute to society. There is no private benefit. Purpose 3 The advancement of amateur sport: Shades of Hope seeks to promote and support the advancement of amateur sport within the area of operation. We do this by continuing to develop the Sports Academy which provides training, equipment, sportswear and a safe environment for young people with a passion for sport. Shades of Hope seeks to engender a sense of discipline, team work and social skills among those who would otherwise be involved in anti-social behaviour including substance abuse. These young people are not the only beneficiaries, but the entire community benefits from the reduction in crime and threat as these develop a new social responsibility. Shades of Hope, as part of this programme, has levelled a pitch at a safe and secure location outside Kampala. This location is used not only for the work of the Academy, but the entire local community has benefitted as the facility is now used for social events which has brought the community closer together. There is no private benefit. Neither the Shades of Hope charity nor any of its volunteers nor anyone associated with the charity derives any private benefit as a result of any of the purposes detailed above. Furthermore, all of the charity’s purposes provide benefits for the individual recipients and for the wider the community as detailed above and are in not harmful in any way.

What your organisation does

Shades of Hope is a non-profit making charity which exists to enhance the lives of those in need in Uganda, in particular Kampala and the surrounding villages. It does this by running a variety of projects for young people and children in Uganda although the community and society at large also benefit from the outcomes of such activities. We have

a child sponsorship programme, a sports programme, providing an opportunity for young men to gather together around the common interest of football. Our Gift for Life programme donates food, clothing and other basic needs to poor families in the rural areas. We also help people in outlying villages develop small businesses i.e. rearing pigs in order to create self-sufficiency, sustainable relief of poverty and a sense of pride within communities. The charity raises funds in the UK and channels donations of clothing and text books to Uganda to see its purposes fulfilled.
