Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from each purpose: (1) an increased awareness and knowledge of the history of our region for residents both old and established. (2) the creation of a permanent record of our local history which would otherwise be lost. (3)an increased awareness and knowledge of the history of Ireland beyond just our local region,

improving our understanding of the different cultures in Ireland.

What your organisation does

(1) monthly meetings usually with guest speakers. The programme for each year always includes talks about the local region and each year a meeting is given over to the members to share their knowledge, memories and memorabilia of the area. Guided visits to places of interest are also arranged. (2) members research topics of local interest to

present to the rest of the Society and these presentations are preserved. Taped interviews have also ben made to record memories. (3) attendance at other local Historical Group meetings, membership of The Federation for Ulster Local Studies, as required by our constitution, and participation in events and an annual quiz between other groups all serve to promote the interest in the study of our history.
