Public benefits

The purpose of Drumlough & District Historical Society is to advance the knowledge of local history and culture by: Researching the history of the area Collecting & recording local historical knowledge folklore from local individuals. Cataloguing articles, photos and other memorabilia for future generations Sharing the accumulated knowledge with

the public at large by publications, exhibitions or other means. Promoting local history & culture, by holding regular meetings, inviting speakers to share their particular knowledge or expertise. The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include much greater awareness of the arts, culture and heritage which are on display thanks to the Society. There is a much greater awareness of the arts, culture and heritage of the greater Drumlough and surrounding area. The charity’s beneficiaries are attendees of the meetings, exhibitions and those who have read our local history publications, viewed the photographs of past scenes of the townland, which are on display thanks to the Society. There are no private benefits flowing from the purpose as all expenditure and efforts are geared towards the public good.

Charitable purposes

The Society is established to: • Promote the benefit of the inhabitants of the Drumlough & Ballygorian area and Rathfriland district area and its environs (hereinafter described as “the area of benefit”) without distinction of age, sex, race, political, religious or other opinion. It will so do by associating the statutory authorities, voluntary organisations and inhabitants in a common effort to advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of the social welfare, education, recreation or other leisure-time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants. • Advance knowledge appreciate and research the history of the people associated with the area of benefit, in particular the life of the late Thomas Rowan Morrow who perished on RMS Titanic 15th April 1912. • Advance knowledge and appreciation of the Ulster-Scots language and culture and to encourage understanding and acceptance of all indigenous cultures to the area of benefit.
