Public benefits

1. The Prevention or Relief of Poverty What we mean by poverty Newhill’s work directly benefits people living in deprivation. Poverty is a complex phenomenon influenced by a number of factors. The poor experience multiple disadvantage through unemployment, low income, poor housing/healthcare, barriers to lifelong learning, culture, sport and

recreation. What benefit flows from this purpose? • Greater community cohesion • Greater access to education; • Greater access to training; • Greater community capacity; • Greater health equalities; • Greater area prosperity; • Greater social mobility How we demonstrate how we meet that need. All Newhill programmes are monitored internally and externally by various audits. Our projects work through the area’s integrated partnership’s theme teams which are: children young people and families; employability; health, community services. This partnership ensures greater focus and synergy in the relief of area poverty. 2. The Advancement of Education Our informal education programme supports the community to increase their skills and confidence. We have three priorities: achievement through learning for adults, for young people, and through building community capacity. Benefit: • Confidence: increases self-esteem • Decision making: engaging in education enables people to make better informed decisions • Independence: acquiring new skills increases independence • Personal development: learning is a process of self-improvement; • Professional Development: ensures people are equipped for change; • Self-direction: learning brings meaning to people’s lives‚ • Career: by learning new skills people open up new opportunities. 3. The Advancement of Health or the Saving of Lives Developing people’s wellbeing is part of our work. For this to happen people need to have a sense and experience of wellbeing in their physical and emotional ‘selves’. By attending to one area (e.g. self-esteem) this will support another (e.g. healthy eating). We do this this by focusing on disadvantaged groups. Benefit: • Newhill activities relate to current health objectives, such as exercise/ diet, but also smoking cessation, coronary heart disease, family support, Our programmes successfully attract local target communities by combining health and social benefits in the activities they provide. • Newhill use a variety of successful strategies to involve local people in project planning and delivery, enabling them to tackle the issues that affect their lives. 4. The Advancement of Citizenship or Community Development Newhill promotes an asset based approach to community development which facilitates people and communities coming together to achieve positive change by using their own knowledge and skills. Positive social outcomes will only occur when communities have the opportunities and facility to control and manage their own futures. Benefits • Community development helps to achieve change within communities to problems that they themselves identify. It is a collective process, not a one-off intervention, co-produced with, not for communities. • Community development work is about enabling, facilitating and building capacity • Community development helps people to contribute their own time and talent to a wide range of activities. • Community development levers in the unique knowledge and skills of local people to address local challenges. 5. The Advancement of Amateur Sport; Physical activity is vital to young people’s development: the skills learned during play, physical education and sport contribute to young people’s holistic development. Through participation young people learn about the importance of key values such as: • honesty, • teamwork, • fair play, • respect for themselves and others, and • adherence to rules.
