Public benefits
The charity trustees (management committee) are satisfied that the public benefit requirement is met. 1. To support and promote the practice of care farming and the advancement of education relating to the methods and benefits of care farming, animal husbandry, agriculture, horticulture, healthy eating and related practices; The benefits are open
to any member of the public interested in developing their awareness, knowledge, and skills in the above areas. The direct benefits include the development of awareness, knowledge and skills in the above areas leading to mental and physical wellbeing directly and to society more widely. People with mental health illnesses or associated problems, and their carers, can also be relieved. The benefits are measured through numbers attending events and evaluations. Some ‘private’ benefit can accrue where individuals decide, independently, to develop products and services in this area but this would be incidental in the context of supporting the above mentioned benefits. 2. To advance the education of the public in subjects relating to sustainable development, waste management and recycling, and the protection, management, enhancement and rehabilitation of the environment; The benefits are open to any member of the public interested in developing their awareness, knowledge, and skills in the above areas. The direct benefits include developed knowledge, skills, and awareness in the above areas leading to improvements in the quality of local and wider environments, improved mental wellbeing and empowerment. The benefits are measured through numbers attending events and evaluations. Some ‘private’ benefit can accrue where, for example, individuals may gain financial benefits through generating renewable energy for sale but this should be in the context of the above benefits, in this case for example, reducing CO2 emissions that effect climate change. 3. To promote or assist in promoting community capacity building programmes and projects for the benefit of the inhabitants within the area of benefit who have need of such assistance as a result of their youth, age, disability or infirmity, or social and economic circumstances, in an effort to increase the abilities, skills and self-confidence of such inhabitants; The charity usually operates in the area of Ards and North Down but will consider working with any community interested in developing their capacity in the areas of healthy eating, care farming, sustainable development, and environmental improvement for the benefits listed above. This will benefit the communities and people involved by empowering them to improve their local environments and by improving participants’ social, physical, and mental sense of wellbeing. This can be measured through feedback and evaluation. 4. To promote social inclusion and integration by working with people who are socially excluded or at risk from becoming socially excluded on the grounds of their unemployment, financial hardship, poverty or social and or economic position, in order to relieve the needs of those people who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society. The benefits are open to any member of the public. The direct benefits include the beneficiaries feeling more integrated in their community and an improved sense of social worth, and where they would not otherwise be able to do such activities on their own. This may at times lead to personal benefits, for example, improving the garden of a private household, but only in the context of helping.
