Public benefits

The Trustees believe that our two purposes satisfy both elements of the public benefit requirement. Purpose 1: The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include people experiencing greater engagement with the historical and cultural history of Maghera and its environs. This will enrich the experience of both those living in, and those

visiting the area and engender increased pride and interest in the town and its surroundings. These benefits are demonstrated by attendance at our various events, monitoring the numbers of people engaging with our social media and recording the increased interest (already apparent locally) in preserving structures, artefacts and records from the past. We also ask for feed back and will conduct surveys in the area. There will be no possibility of harm from this purpose. The beneficiaries of this purpose are the people living in Maghera and the surrounding districts, visitors to the area and future generations who will benefit from the increased interest now being shown in the the importance of local history and culture as this will lead to more of our heritage being preserved, archived and recorded. A private benefit to trustees arises from the increased pride and interest in the the town but this benefit is incidental and necessary to ensure that the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. Purpose 2: The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the provision of a Centre which will act as a focal point for everyone interested in the history and culture of Maghera and its surroundings, so encouraging people to engage with and learn about the heritage of the area. A further benefit is that information and artefacts relating to the area's past can be preserved in a suitable and secure location for the future and still be available for the public to view and consult so enhancing their knowledge of local heritage. These benefits can be demonstrated by the number of visitors to the Centre, visitor feedback and questionnaires and the records and papers being preserved for present and future generations. This purpose does not lead to harm. The beneficiaries of this purpose are all those who live in, or visit, Maghera or its surrounding districts, and future generations who will benefit from the local heritage, history and culture preserved as a result of the Centre. A private benefit flowing from this purpose is gained by trustees who benefit from the access to the information and records available in the Centre enabling their research. This benefit is incidental and necessary to ensure benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

Our Society organises lectures, tours, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, publications, walks, inter-active events, all on the subject of the history and heritage of the area. We also encourage the use of our website to access information and invite people to share knowledge they may have on the heritage of the town by posting on the website. We

actively work to document, preserve and record historical buildings and structures in the area of Maghera and its surroundings. We work to collect and preserve significant material to include in our Centre. We interact with other similar societies deemed appropriate by the trustees, to exchange views and share topics of interest for our mutual development. We lobby to seek to preserve structures and buildings of significance.
