What your organisation does
We are an Ulster-Scots Cultural Society. Since the Society has formed in 2010 it has organised a number of cultural nights in the local area which featured Ulster-Scots bands from the locality and further afield for the benefit of the local community to enjoy and each year get-togethers are organised were cultural like minded people can meet up and
experience Ulster-Scots culture. In 2013 it was noted that there was an interest in Ulster-Scots music classes in the local area. Funding for tuition was applied for from the Ulster-Scots agency and the application was successful. In 2014 we ran classes in Traditional Ulster Scots Flute and Drum from the start of February till the end of June. The classes were a complete success with 16 students completing the course. 16 people from the local community benefited from these classes by learning an instrument and music. This service provided by the society was free for anyone in the local community to make use of and was not available anywhere else in the local community. The wider community has benefited from experiencing the music provided by these students when they performed in public at local events. After these classes had finished the society continued to meet weekly to provide a platform whereby the students and others could meet up to perform traditional Ulster-Scots music. In 2015 we have again started a tuition course in Traditional Ulster Scots Flute and Drum after successful applying for Ulster-Scots agency funding. So far 15 students are benefiting from this educational service and again is free for anyone to partake of. It is the society’s intention to continue running these courses long into the future, and to continue to meet regularly to explore and appreciate the Ulster-Scots culture and run events for all the local community to experience.
