Public benefits
Public Benefit The wider public in Ards and North Down in particular, and Northern Ireland in general, will gain an appreciation of, and understanding of the life and work of Columbanus, and through that an appreciation and pride in their cultural heritage arising from the importance of Bangor Abbey throughout Western Europe in early mediaeval
times, and the contribution that Irish monks who travelled to continental Europe made to the foundations of Christendom that prevails and affects the lives of all Europeans to this day. 2. How these Direct Benefits are capable of being demonstrated, proven or evidenced. Simple street surveys carried out at intervals in Bangor and the surrounding towns will demonstrate the growing awareness of the local cultural Christian heritage, which should increase as our schools’ programmes gather pace. 3. Public Harms We believe there will be no harm to the public. 4. Private Benefits There are no private benefits relating to the Charity Trustees and/or others, intended or unintended. 5. Whether fees are charged for beneficiaries in order to use services and how we ensure the poor not excluded. Our public meetings, of the organisation, for ecumenical church services or for lectures, are free for all who may wish to attend, whether they are members of the Society or not. Our educational programmes are delivered to schools and other bodies free of charge, as are our escorting of groups on guided tours of the particular sites associated with Columbanus. In these ways we set out to reach all sections of the community, regardless of their material means.
What your organisation does
FOCB organises regular public free of charge meetings which include talks on the legacy of Columbanus and related topics. We organise events in conjunction with other bodies celebrating the legacy of Columbanus and spreading knowledge on this subject. This year we are working with, the local churches and local authority for a Columban Festival in
Bangor in November and with the local authority, local churches and the Arts Council for a weekend wide commemoration of the annual anniversary of the death of Columbanus in November. Cove 19 is restricting the preparation, but we will use on- line for the Annual United Sevice. We have relevant educational course material for use in schools at Primary, Key Stage 3 (Post Primary) and Sixth Form level. We are working with the local authority and Friends of Columbanus Groups in Luxeil and Bobbio in the establishment of the Council of Europe Columban Way, a cultural route following Columbanus's travels and which has now expanded to cover other locations. We are organising a corps of volunteers to undertake Blue Badge accreditation and to receive relevant clearances to take parties round the Bangor Columbanus Trail, and to present exhibitions in local schools. We are promulgating information about our organisation, its events, and information about Columbanus and those people and institutions around him on our website. We conduct research and compile papers on Columbanus and related topics, and promulgate these on our website.
