Public benefits

Purpose. Practice and performance of music There is considerable research demonstrating that music, both for the performer and the listener, has a positive effect on well-being. There is the direct benefit of learning and performing in major musical productions bringing a widening of knowledge and experience, and the enjoyment of performing in

major venues. There is also a direct benefit in hearing great music performed to a high standard. The benefits that accrue are demonstrated by asking the participants and the audience. Members of the organisation are closely involved in the details of a musical programme from conception to delivery. Their views are constantly evaluated and have always been positive. Listeners complete evaluation questionnaires to gauge their response to concerts, and again the results are positive. The ultimate measure of an audience’s appreciation is that they keep coming back. In a public performance there is the potential for harm. The planning for each concert includes a detailed risk assessment at an early stage. We work with the venue to evaluate and where necessary mitigate any potential risk. We carry comprehensive insurance, including Public Liability insurance. The small risk that a concert performance brings is greatly outweighed by the benefits. The beneficiaries are the performers and the audience. It is necessary to use professional musicians and soloists for some concerts and they may require to be paid a fee This may be necessary to achieve the required level of quality but is incidental to the functioning of the organisation No member of the choir receives such private benefit. Purpose. Study and knowledge of music The direct benefit from this purpose is to improve musical knowledge and to raise the standard of choral performance. Benefit can be demonstrated by improved choral performance and enhanced choral experience. Formal evaluation of training sessions has been undertaken and these demonstrate that the participants have a very positive attitude to the programmes. No obvious harm can be anticipated from this purpose. The beneficiaries of vocal training are choral singers. Formal coaching programmes are aimed at choir members, members of other choirs in Northern Ireland and members of choirs in the Republic of Ireland. With structured training programmes there may be a necessity to pay a fee to tutors and musicians. This is incidental to the purpose of the organisation and It is regarded as necessary to do this in order to obtain the best quality of training. No choir member receives any private benefit.

What your organisation does

Choral and orchestral concerts, involving musicians and soloists. We collaborate with musicians and soloists, both locally and nationally. We particularly try to use local up and coming artists Choral coaching activities will normally be led by professional musicians and choral tutors The choir is based at Saint George's Parish Church, which

has had a tradition of sponsoring and encouraging musical performance. Although we are not part of the church organisation, we have played our part in maintaining the rich musical heritage in Saint George's over 30 years
