Public benefits
Conserving native endangered red squirrels for future generations to enjoy. This also enhances tourism by attracting the public into the local area and gives the local community a pride in their native biodiversity. Educating and informing the public, enhances their skill sets and has a benefit to physical and mental health by engaging them in
the great outdoors. TRSG recruits and trains volunteers over 18 years giving them life skills which may be of benefit in later employment opportunities, appreciation of their local biodiversity and relieves social isolation.
What your organisation does
We actively engage with families, teachers and the general public at our annual Red Squirrel Day. This year Tollymore Red Squirrel Group took park in Mammal Day at Belfast Zoo, game fairs and environmental events. We also work with schools fulfilling parts of the Northern Ireland National curriculum. The group works in partnership with NIEA, Forest
Service (DARDNI), Mourne Heritage Trust, Queen's University, Northern Ireland Squirrel Forum and other red squirrel groups locally and nationally to survey, record and promote red squirrels. We also work with groups and clubs e.g scouts, U3A, brownies, RSPB and groups of various ages, ethnicity, gender, religions and abilities to promote red squirrel conservation. We also organise walks and talks for the general public which often engages with tourists to the local area. AT NO TIME DO VOLUNTEERS WITH TRSG ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR UNDER 18'S OR VULNERABLE ADULTS. THIS IS MADE CLEAR AT EVERY EVENT. THE VOLUNTEERS ARE FACILITATORS ONLY.
