Public benefits
The public benefit flowing from the purposes of Fairhill Youth Centre is that hundreds of young people from the Maghera district have access to a facility where they can engage in a variety of youth activities both educational and recreational. Some of these activities include discos, football tournaments, general fitness awareness, beauty nights,
bowls nights to name but a few. There are also specialist activities and programmes which promote self confidence. The young people benefit because they have a venue in which to meet under the guidance of trained leaders. They benefit from gaining a better understanding of themselves and others, leadership, personal responsibility and a whole range of individual skills. They also benefit from summer schemes and residentials where they can participate in lots of outdoor activities such as canoeing, wall climbing, orienteering, learning skills that are going to be of great benefit to them in the future . Their parents and the general community benefit from the fact that young people have a properly organised and managed programme of intervention which engages them in interesting and enjoyable activities and prevents them from becoming involved in anti-social activities. These benefits are measured regularly by evaluation forms which are distributed at the end of each event. There is also a youth committee which is able to give important feedback to the leaders and to the management. Parents are also involved as much as possible and regular feedback on the benefits is received from them. There is no harm flowing from the activities of Fairhill Youth Centre and no private benefit apart from the wages paid to the Youth Leaders without whom the organisation would not function. All other management roles are voluntary.
What your organisation does
Fairhill Youth Centre is situated at the north end of Maghera. It caters for children and young people by providing a range of youth orientated activities in a range of evenings throughout the week. There are planned programmes of activities aimed at ensuring that young people have the opportunity to meet and enjoy their leisure time in a safe
supervised environment. Young people also participate in activities designed to develop their physical fitness, their mental resilience and their emotional capacities. Normal youth activities such as football, basketball, netball are combined with discos, dance, health and beauty and these are accompanied by regular workshops on issues such as substance abuse and misuse, safety awareness, cyber bullying and respect for themselves and others and their communities. The Centre works under the guidance of the NEELB Youth Service guidelines.
