Public benefits
PURPOSE 1. Alleviate rural isolation & promote Community development. The benefit arising from this purpose is that people get out & about & meet others in roughly the same circumstances. They are less lonely, take up new interests & make new friends. Some people of different backgrounds who have been lifelong neighbours are meeting for the first
time in a social setting & find they have a lot in common. Others who are new to the area feel it helps them to integrate, this is a rural area & most newcomers are from urban areas. This helps to blend the community & encourage people to look at what contribution they could make. Some have volunteered for the first time in their lives, our members age ranges from late 50s to 90s. Most are mid 70s & 80s & all have a fun time. The beneficiaries are the older inhabitants of Glenavy & Feumore area & their environs. PURPOSE 2. Promote better physical & mental health. Talks from health professionals are very popular. People like to hear about health issues such as diabetes, stroke, heart attack & arthritis in an anonymous situation if they have any anxieties they are reassured & pointed in the right direction. They address health issues rather than worry about them. Podiatry & reflexology clinics are very popular. The benefits of exercise on mind & body are illustrated in armchair aerobics, yoga, playing bridge & board games. Improved health outcomes, reduced levels of stress & the feel good factor are recognised. The beneficiaries are the older inhabitants of Glenavy & Feumore area & their environs. PURPOSE 3. Provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation, education & other leisure time occupations & improving of life for the said inhabitants. People regain confidence, try out activities they had never dreamed of & found they were good at them & enjoyed the experience. Most people have tried out all our activities drama, computers, art, bridge, cookery demonstrations have been about the most popular. Some had never been to the theatre & Belfast which is only 20 miles away was somewhere foreign, most 80 & 90 year olds had a very restricted life style & it was not the done thing to go out to lunch/dinner & a show before our group started 9 years ago. The beneficiaries are the older inhabitants of Glenavy & Feumore area & their environs. The public benefit of all the objects are demonstrated with feedback from the members' meetings, comments and suggestion box also nos. attending & requests for repeats. The only object that we think could be potentially harmful would be 'Better physical and mental health'. People might not go to their GP if they think they are getting enough advice from the talks & health professionals. It is always emphasised that if they have a specific problem they should visit their GP. We can't see any harm in anything else. Private benefit could be that the committee can avail of the professional advice too. They can gain skills, knowledge & experience which can be transferred to other settings. All committee members range in age from over 60 to 83.
