Public benefits

1.The direct benefits which flow from the purpose of advancing Christian faith include ... We aim to demonstrate Christian love and acceptance in a practical way. The Way In is a cross-community, non-denominational organisation, with a Christian ethos, which is open to those of all faiths and none. It aims to bring the Christian message of love,

acceptance and salvation to all who come through the door. One of the ways in which it aims to model Christian love, in this case to older people in the community, is by offering an opportunity to find friendship through coming together once a month for a simple lunch and a short Christian message. We also facilitate volunteers and charitable organisations to work with vulnerable people including those in poverty in the lower Ormeau area - this helps to give the elderly and disadvantaged a sense of well-being, of being valued for who they are as they come together at organised events in an encouraging and positive environment. They also support each other through friendship experienced on these occasions. This in turn means they require less support from the statutory agencies and hopefully also has a knock-on effect in keeping them in better health, both emotionally and physically. It gives them a reason for getting out of the house instead of sitting indoors and feeling lonely and neglected. Further benefits which flow from the purposes are the engagement of local people, both volunteers and recipients, in the provisioning of bible studies and prayer groups. 2.The direct benefits which flow from the purpose of advancing education include ... A homework club meets weekly which directly benefits a minority ethnic group, Somali teenagers, in increasing their education. Facilitation of counselling groups such as Narcotics anonymous and True Freedom Trust, is helping many individuals learn how to lead a better quality of life through a more positive self image and providing a needed support group in a place which promotes a Christian ethos. We provide a local meeting point for ethnic groups in the university area of Belfast to hold english classes and homework clubs increasing their education but also promoting integration and better community relations. We Facilitate counselling sessions for other charitable groups who would not otherwise be able to serve the local community increasing awareness of health and well being issues. 3.The direct benefits which flow from the relieving poverty include ... Providing regular recreational events by way of meals for the elderly in the area thus supporting the existing structure provided by local government and enhancing provision and aiding the relief of poverty of the elderly in the south Belfast and university area. We provide a local base for other charities to hold meetings in the area furthering charitable work in the south Belfast area generally These benefits are demonstrated through the groups continuing to use the facilities at The Way In year on year, with feedback in the form of complimentary comments being given to one of our key trustees who is based in the house on a daily basis. The number of users has slowly increased over the years as the charity has gained recognition in the local area. We don’t believe that there is any harm as a result of the presence of our ministry. The only private benefit flowing from this purpose is that the caretaker has a single room provided for his accommodation. This is to comply with the requirements of our buildings insurance so that the house is not classified as unoccupied. It provides a level of security which is necessary in this area of south Belfast. This is an incidental benefit as housekeeping duties are involved for the caretaker which is unpaid for.

What your organisation does

The Way In is a cross-community, non-denominational organisation, with a Christian ethos, which is open to those of all faiths and none. It aims to bring the Christian message of love, acceptance and salvation to all who come through the door. One of the ways in which it aims to model Christian love, in this case to older people in the community,

is by offering an opportunity to find friendship through coming together once a month for a simple lunch and a short Christian message. In addition during the day, Monday to Friday, anyone who calls at the door will be offered a cup of tea and a listening ear in a totally non-judgmental way. In these ways relationships are built up and opportunities can be found to talk in a natural, non-aggressive way about the message of the Gospel, and to pray with people. The rooms are also made available, free of charge (although donations are always welcome) for groups wishing to find a venue for activities such as counselling, prayer, homework club, Bible study, etc. This is in order to demonstrate Christian love and acceptance in a practical way to all who might wish to attend the various activities.
