Public benefits
The aim of an ABC for Life is to help prevent premature and unnecessary sudden death in Northern Ireland by providing education to the public in the skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as well as the necessary training equipment to the primary schools in Northern Ireland. Therefore the direct benefits to the people of Northern Ireland
will be; education in cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills, provision of free training equipment to primary schools and overall increased level of cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills in the community. The direct benefits have been demonstrated. The ABC have carried out research projects, published in international peer review medical journals, proving that the scheme improves both theoretical and practical skills in CPR in our school children. The main function of the scheme is to improve health by improving education, this is carried out on the school grounds with the teacher present so it is unlikely that harm will result form this education. The benefits of an increased public education in CPR vastly outweigh any potential harm, we educate the children in correct initial assessment, correct hand position and managing situations such as vomiting to reduce the risks to the patient and the resuscitator. There are no private benefits as a result of this scheme. No fees are charged and all equipment is provided free of charge.
