Public benefits
See below our purposes with the benefits which flow from each. 2.1 - Relieve poverty, sickness and the aged and to promote the benefit of the inhabitants of the multi-storey flats in Conway and district area of Dunmurry and its environs Direct benefits include increased information, specifically housing advice, benefits, ASB, and support in
Council-related issues. Signposting to local services/organisations is provided to local residents. A number of local residents would be unable to access such information otherwise due to poor transport links, cost of travel, and mobility difficulties. .. by associating the statutory authorities, voluntary organisations and inhabitants in a common effort to advance education, Direct benefits include increased education/knowledge and improved relationships between local residents & statutory authorities. The Dales provides opportunities for local residents to engage in formal courses which have included child protection, alcohol/drugs awareness, enterprise projects, community development etc. Such courses developed an awareness that education is more than reading/writing, it is about social welfare, improved confidence and developing skills. Individuals are keen to share their knowledge with others in the local area. ..and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation or other leisure-time occupation, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants; Through the drop in facility in the community house local residents are able to receive support and offer ideas towards improving conditions locally. There is reduced isolation, specifically for the elderly/vulnerable, with a support network in place. The group works with emergency services to ensure the wellbeing of all residents. The group hold fire safety seminars and work with local PSNI to address ASB. The group are a direct point of contact for residents who wish to report ASB incidents and the group also attend PCSP & inter-agency meetings. This has led to reduced anxiety within the estate in terms of reporting ASB. The group also provide information to residents regarding grants, improvement schemes, benefits etc. that otherwise they may not be aware of. The Dales seek to create an attractive and relaxing environment through planting and seating areas for local people to enjoy. This has led to increased pride within the local estate, developing an improved image of the estate and reducing isolation as local residents work together. None of the purposes listed give rise to any harm and all of the beneficiaries live within the area of benefit. Private benefits arise from some of the purposes listed above, in that committee members/trustees gain private benefits, including improved skills and experience through their involvement in organising meetings/events as well as attendance of these. Such skills and experience may be beneficial to trustees in other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to the beneficiaries
What your organisation does
The Dales CA is a community group involved in many aspects of community life within the local area. As the majority of our residents would be senior citizens, both able bodied and physically challenged, living in high rise accommodation brings its own set of challenges and we need to ensure their needs are prioritised to ensure a duty of care and
equality is maintained. The group is managed by a committee who are elected at a public AGM on a yearly basis. The committee operate a community house 3 mornings and 1 evening per week, which offers a drop-in facility to local residents. We produce and distribute quarterly newsletters to update residents on what is happening or is planned. We keep abreast of current policies which can impact on the local area, and undertake training courses. The Dales CA also facilitates external meetings. We attend various meeting with statutory agencies and voluntary bodies, including inter-agency meetings which are used to aid crime prevention, increase community safety and address housing issues etc. The Dales CA liaises with the landlord (Housing Executive) and appointed major contractors on behalf of the community. We organise bus trips to places of local interest, and each year during the Summer months we have a bar-b-cue in the grounds of the flats to encourage meeting neighbours and social interaction. The Dales CA take part in good practice visits to other communities, in order to learn what they are doing, what works and what doesn't.
