Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from purpose 3.1.a for members of Voices of Lecale Charity are as follows: • effective learning outcomes in singing safely and confidently using 'natural voice' singing techniques (as promoted by The Natural Voice Practitioners Network) • awareness and knowledge of songs and singing traditions from a range of cultures

and traditions around the globe • development of self-confidence and self-esteem over time through opportunities to acquire, improve and develop singing and performance skills • improved wellbeing in physical and mental health that accrue from singing, as documented by a growing body of published academic research and anecdotally by members of the charity • enhanced quality of life from the social interaction and friendships which flow from belonging to a choir The direct benefits which flow from purpose 3.1(b) include: • the provision of opportunities for our members to participate in a performance art ie choral singing, from which they can derive enjoyment and creative satisfaction • the provision of musical performances for the enjoyment of people in N. Ireland • the provision of opportunities for people to participate in making music through informal recitals in local community venues where we encourage members of the audience to join in with the singing eg carol-singing. We aim to provide participation opportunities for the audience at as many of our performances as possible These benefits are demonstrated through... • regular feedback from members documented in evaluation reports, choir newsletters and annual reports • published research papers from relevant bodies regarding the impact of singing on wellbeing and health, publicised by bodies such as The Natural Voice Practitioners Network We cannot identify at present the possibility of harm flowing from our purposes The charity’s beneficiaries are: 1. Primary Beneficiaries: the members of the charity ie members of the community choir, Voices of Lecale, based in N. Ireland. 2. Other Beneficiaries: (a) the general public in N. Ireland (b) sections of the public in N. Ireland including: • people interested in choral singing and/or the arts who attend our performances (to date in the Co. Down and Belfast area) and/or listen to our singing in recorded media ie CDs • community groups and organisations who invite our members to give recitals eg for festivals and arts programmes • beneficiaries of other charities in N. Ireland to whom we donate money raised through our activities such as sales of recorded CDs, and income from performances. As a non-profit charity ourselves we have an ethos of 'giving back' to the wider community. To date (2007 - 2015) we have raised over £20,000 for a range of charities (cancer and kidney research, suicide prevention and support to families, Alzheimer's support, RNIB, cystic fibrosis family support, Mainstay Downe Residential Project (young people with learning disabilities)) The only private benefits flowing from this purpose are: - skills learned or developed by the charity's committee members such as in events management, report writing etc and this is incidental and necessary to carry out the annual programme and activities of the choir. - development of the teaching and promotional skills of the Musical Director of the charity to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

Our organisation is a community choir based in Downpatrick, County Down. Members meet on a weekly basis over 3 terms in the year and give recitals and performances mainly in the mid-Down area. We have recorded 3 CDs to date. We provide learning and cultural opportunities for our members and enhance their well-being and self-esteem through

participation and enjoyment of the arts. We provide cultural experiences and entertainment for the local community at low/no cost. As a non-profit organisation with an ethos of giving back to the wider community we choose one or two charities agreed at our AGM to support in the coming year. Since our formation in May 2007 we have raised over £20,000 for a variety of charities.
