Public benefits

Our organisation meets the public benefit requirements in a number of ways - Firstly we perpetuate the traditional musical practice of accordion playing and provide musical tuition and performance opportunities to our members. Our membership is open to all those who share the aims and ethos of the organisation. Currently membership ranges in age

from 8 - 78 years. We place no membership fee on those who wish to join therefore we do not exclude those in poverty or the socially excluded. We provide free musical instruments and all uniform and equipment to our members. Members benefit by gaining musical knowledge, performance and competitive experience and many related social skills. The wider public benefit from our activities in that we perform widely in our locality and throughout Northern Ireland. Each year we perform at approximately 30 public performances including parades, concerts, church services and charity events. Our organisation creates a sense of civic pride both among its members, our supporters and families and the wider community in the Mourne area. Currently our membership is around 35 playing members but the area of benefit is much wider and includes wider families, audiences at events and the general public of the area. These are demonstrated through our continued development of new musicians, public performances and competitions where we have become a successful prize winning band. We are in great demand by the local community to play at a range of events and functions many of which are for the purposes of raising money for other charities. We measure the outcomes and success of our activities by receiving feedback from audiences, the volume of bookings we receive to play at events and general approval from the local community. We do not believe that any of our activities or purposes lead to any harm or detrimental effect to any member of the community. The only private benefit flowing from our activities/purposes is that members at times receive training in various topics such as Safeguarding, Marshalling and First Aid – these are entirely incidental and result in no financial gain to the individual.

What your organisation does

Our principle purpose is to teach and perform accordion band repetoire. To do this we tutor members in musicianship and practice weekly to maintain high standards. We also run seperate classes for learners and improving players. In addition, we perform at approximately 30 public performances each year and in 2014 recorded a CD/DVD which was used

to promote the band to a wide audience at home and further afield. We enter competitive music contests and compete against other similar bands both in Northern Ireland and in Great Britain. In order to support these activities we fund raise through a range of initiatives and apply for sutiable grants from funders when available. We raise funds for chairities - eg. last year we hosted a family barbeque in aid of Action Cancer which raised over £400 for the charity.
