Public benefits
The European Angus Cattle Registration Company objectives are to encourage, promote and improve the breeding of European Angus cattle in the UK and Ireland. The public benefits that flow from the purpose of promoting the improvement of the breeding of European Angus cattle in the UK and Ireland are:- (i) The advancement of animal
welfare by increasing the efficiency of beef cattle, specifically the European Angus breed, in a sustainable manner consistent with environmental protection throughout the UK and Ireland. (ii) The provision of information and services that inform and support the breeding decisions of beef farmers and inform the general public. (iii) The education of the agricultural community and the general public through the provision of animal information and statistics, open meetings, farm walks, open days and club tours where best practice can be viewed and demonstrated. (iv) Contributing to and improving the social welfare of the rural community by organising open days, farm walks and club tours. These benefits can be evidenced in records kept by the organisation of the numbers of those of all ages who have attended open meetings, open days, farm walks, club tours and who have requested information from the organisation. Some small private benefit is obtained by the beef farmers who use the services of the organisation, but this is ancillary to the main purpose, and is greatly outweighed by the gains in public benefit. No harm arises from these purposes.
What your organisation does
The European Angus Cattle Registration Company carries out a number of functions and roles to deliver its objectives for the public benefit. Each year the EACRC holds its AGM for its members and their guests. At the AGM members have the opportunity to hear from a range of speakers in the fields of animal husbandry, genetics, farm development and
farm business management. These talks and lectures provide the members with information and insight as to how better to run their farms with the aim of delivering first quality produce at a profitable and competitive price. Each year the EACRC runs a very successful Steak Tasting competition across Northern Ireland. The benefit of the competition is to raise the awareness of the breed, promote Northern Irish beef, and promote local beef butchers and processors, both large and small. Young Farmers Clubs across Northern Ireland are engaged as the taste judges in the competition to allow them to learn the importance of quality and taste in the produce that they hope to create in their chosen career. Each year, the EACRC holds open days on its member’s farms which are free and open to the general public. At these open days, the public has an opportunity to learn about the cattle and how they are reared. They also have the opportunity to try the produce for themselves. The EACRC maintains a cattle herd register for every single European Angus beast. This ensures that the integrity of the national herd is maintained and that full traceability from gate to plate can be achieved. The EACRC attends numerous local agricultural shows across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland each year at which it promotes the breed to farmers and the general public. At the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society show each spring, the EACRC has its own class of cattle on show for farmers and the general public to see.
