Public benefits
Public Benefit 1. The benefit which flows from these purposes will see greater access for the people of Derry~Londonderry, and other parts of NI, to quality cultural programming and participation. It will also ensure that a strong legacy project emerges from the public investment already made in Derry’s cultural output during its City of Culture
year. Another benefit from this purpose is that the project takes an innovative creative approach to addressing one of Northern Ireland’s ongoing obstacles to lasting peace, the issue of dealing with the past. Trial of Lundy is a cross-community initiative that gives people from Northern Ireland an opportunity to revisit the past, understand their history and gain greater mutual understanding. It offers participants and audiences opportunities to be active citizens in contributing ideas and perspectives in a safe space that may lead towards conflict resolution, equality, human rights and racial harmony. It has further benefits in that it promotes cultural heritage, education and learning from NI in a form that delivers high production values and a quality agenda. This will enhance the reputation of Northern generally and its cultural sector specifically as a place and a people who can deliver first class cultural productions. NI's reputation will benefit significantly by profiling it as a place that values creativity and cultural vibrancy, making it attractive for its own people and for tourists and investors. In turn the NI public will benefit from the models created through the Trial of Lundy Ltd. i.e. creative problem solving approaches to issues such as commemoration, story-telling, the deconstruction of old narratives and the recreation of positive, shared narratives. The benefit will be demonstrated through ongoing evaluation of the project and feedback from participants, the public, the Board of Directors and the media. The beneficiaries of this purpose are the citizens of Derry, the North West and across NI who will either attend events as audience members or who will actively participate in the project through productions, re-enactments or educational programming. There is no private benefit discernable from this project. There may be travel, accommodation or food providers who benefit from the business of people coming to the city to participate, but this is incidental and to be anticipated with any work of this nature.
What your organisation does
The Trial of Lundy Ltd. was formed on 2 April 2014. Its objects are the advancement of education, the arts, culture and heritage and the promotion of human rights, conflict resolution, reconciliation and the promotion of religious harmony, equality and diversity, including the advancement of citizenship and community development, by promoting,
producing, presenting, staging performances and re-enactments, organising events and publishing material in all forms of media on themes related to or arising from 'The Trial Of Lundy' project which shall continue indeterminately with a view to hosting an annual Lundy Winter School and other educational events yet to be determined. Nearly 330 years after one of the most emotive episodes in the history of Derry-Londonderry, we propose to give the iconic figure of Robert Lundy his day in court. Our aim is to conduct an innovative, cultural event in 2016 in the form of a ‘mock trial’ with real lawyers stating the evidence for and against the defendant Robert Lundy - who will be played by an actor. The case for and against his prosecution will be followed by the questioning of historical witnesses also played by actors. We will stage a world class, professional theatrical event that will capture the imagination of the public. It will be the culmination of several years’ work during which we will have built upon the keen audience that we know exists for this project. We have created a website, educational material and graphic storybooks and will continue to develop materials and events in line with our aims, e.g. the annual Trial of Lundy Winter School which provides a cultural platform for investigation, discussion, education and debate around issues of history, identity and politics in Northern Ireland. Its intention is to promote peace building through art and to leave a positive legacy of new knowledge and skills along with a model of practice for artists on how to work with difficult themes in a divided society.
