Public benefits

The public benefit flowing from the purposes of Cookstown and Magherafelt Volunteer Centre is that voluntary activity will be promoted throughout the community. This means that groups involved in the relief of poverty, sickness, disability, old age or other charitable purpose will have an opportunity to encourage the personal development of all

individuals engaged in such voluntary activity. These individuals will benefit from a range of educational activities put in place by the Centre to enhance their well-being and personal development. These volunteers will also receive equal opportunity training and guidance. A further benefit will be that this training will be made available to their management committee members. A major public benefit of the activities of Cookstown & Magherafelt Volunteer Centre is that the Centre will provide ongoing training and relevant advice to any organisation run, managed or involving volunteers providing that they are there to promote charitable activities. This will develop the skills of local voluntary community organisations. It will make them more effective and efficient and it will ensure that the volunteers who work for them are adequately trained so that they can do their work to the benefit of the group and at the same time that the group will value the contribution being made by its volunteers. The benefits will be measured by the numbers of volunteers registered with the Centre and by the number of groups coming forward for advice and support. All training sessions will be evaluated by individual feedback and the use of the Centre’s evaluation and monitoring systems. Feedback will also be sought from any group using the services of the Centre. There is no harm flowing from any of the activities of the Centre and no private benefit except for the wages of staff which are necessary for the functioning of the organisation.

What your organisation does

The Centre was established to encourage volunteering throughout the community of Magherafelt and Cookstown. It recruits, trains advises, guides and places individuals willing to undertake volunteering with any organisation set up for charitable purposes within the area of benefit. It is a focal point for all organisations who involve volunteers

in their services offering advice, guidance and signposting to the most appropriate agency. It provides a central information service for community organisations to discuss how they might best source and train suitable volunteers to match their individual charitable requirements. It compiles a library and information resource dealing with all aspects of volunteering for the benefit of individual volunteers and the organisations which use them. It also offers training and personal development for all individuals engaged in voluntary work. It is a recognised centre for training in equal opportunities ensuring that all recruitment, promotion and training will be dependent upon an individual’s ability to carry out their role. The Volunteer Centre also sources appropriate funding to set up relevant activities that will benefit the volunteers or placement organisations so that good practice is encouraged for all our members. We are also an umbrella body for Access NI and we carry out checks for any individual who is volunteering in any community organisation.
