Public benefits
The direct benefits that flow from our purpose are the better conservation of the red squirrel, increased understanding and knowledge of their distribution and the species that impact on them. We also anticipate an improvement in the quality and extent of habitat that the red squirrel relies upon. These benefits are evidenced through increased
recording of sightings of the species which are managed by the biological recording centre for Northern Ireland, the Centre for Environmental Data and Recording (CEDaR). Interpretation and materials on issues impacting the species have increased and are displayed or available on publicly-accessible sites and as printed or downloadable materials. The public benefit through an enhanced appreciation of their natural heritage and improved opportunities to experience and enjoy it. Other benefits to the public include the provision of advice and guidance on a range of issues impacting on the red squirrel, the opportunity to attend meetings and workshops and to have new experiences or gain new skills. For example, graduates and volunteers can get involved in our volunteer work to gain insights and valuable volunteer experience. Our group also provides an outlet for people to meet like-minded people. Our group is inclusive and accessible to all with meetings held centrally and training/workshops free. We do charge a nominal fee for membership however this is used to cover over-heads and wouldn’t exclude any beneficiaries to gain benefit from our activities. We cannot identify any harm that may arise for our work as the red squirrel isn’t a threat to any other species or habitat. There are no real private benefits other than some secondary instances perhaps for private businesses such as increased visitor numbers to estates/properties that support red squirrels or the sale of merchandise such as professional images of red squirrels.
What your organisation does
The Fermanagh Red Squirrel Group’s main purpose is the conservation of the native, endangered mammal, the Red Squirrel. County Fermanagh is a hot-spot for the species with good populations across the county, particularly in West Fermanagh and East Fermanagh. We are working to improve the conservation status of the species – helping to sustain
existing populations through supplementary feeding, educating members of the public on the issues surrounding the conservation of the species, and working with statutory agencies and other environmental organisations on this. FRSG is a member of the Northern Ireland Squirrel Forum (NISF) which is facilitated by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA). The group works to agreed Codes of Best Practice, shares knowledge and expertise and is a valuable forum for discussion.
