Public benefits
The benefits which flow from the purpose of relieving financial hardship for young people with mild – moderate learning disabilities who live local to the Newry & Mourne area include promoting social inclusion at a minimal cost to our young adult members. These benefits are demonstrated by providing activities and outings using mainstream
facilities and amenities which are partially funded by donations and contributions gathered through our fundraising efforts. No member is disadvantaged due to lack of personal financial resources in participating in any activity or outing. TAG also organises an annual subsidised holiday when our members enjoy sight seeing and group activities including theatre trips. This break provides a holiday for the beneficiaries and much needed respite for their family and carers. The direct benefits which flow from the second purpose include the wide range of activities and outings the members participate in. TAG members participate in activities such as archery, outdoor pursuits, pitch & putt, Formula 1 go-karting, pilates and boxercise. TAG members occasionally request courses such as confidence building, safety in the home and community and self awareness courses. These courses also provide the members with the knowledge to increase their independence, self esteem and confidence as well as improving their physical and mental well-being. These benefits are demonstrated through feed back and evaluation provided at planning nights. This purpose does not lead to harm. In furtherance to the above aims, promoting and obtaining the provision of health and social services, recreational facilities and practical assistance for individuals with mild - moderate learning disabilities who live local to the Newry & Mourne area is achieved by providing activities and outings using mainstream facilities and amenities. TAG endeavours to keep families of young people with learning disabilities up-to-date with information and reforms taking place within the statutory social services which may be of relevance to them. This aim provides no harm and has no private benefit. The encouragement of use of local community facilities and a bid to promote the wider integration of young adults with a learning disability has been strengthened by TAG as some members have established friendships and continued this outside of TAG activities and would occasionally meet to develop these friendships by using local facilities such as attending other clubs (ie: City Strikers Special Olympic Bowling Club), shopping together and visiting the cinema. Progressive effective communication between the TAG and the members has been established by a sub committee of two members and two volunteers who take direction from the group in relation to activity development providing feed-back and any other issues relevant to the smooth running of the group. TAG has 14 volunteers at present who actively participate, encourage and support the members with all activities and outings. We are committed to equality and diversity for both members and volunteers and recruit volunteers from all sections of the community regardless of race, religion, sex or gender. All funds and other sources of income obtained, collected and received by way of contributions, donations or other lawful methods are used solely for the objectives of TAG. A co-ordinator is employed who is not a member of the Management Committee or TAG to develop, co-ordinate, organise and carry on the work of the group and is responsible for administration, promotion of the group and organisation of events such as fundraising, outings and activities for the members. The co-ordinator liaises with other voluntary organisations both locally and nationally. TAG has established cross-border relations with a similar group in Dundalk and meet on occasions for events.
