Public benefits

The public benefits arising from each of our three stated charitable purposes are as follows: Purpose 1:The advancement of health or of saving of lives through the provision of our voluntary first aid, ambulance and medical support services. The direct benefits which flow from purpose 1 include the saving of lives and improved outcomes for

casualties who are in receipt of pre hospital care from Order of Malta volunteers. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from those cared for by Order of Malta volunteers, from organisations to which our volunteers provide medical support, first aid and ambulance services, and from ongoing internal review of patient treatment forms and clinical practices. In providing pre hospital care to the sick and injured there is a small risk of harm where full patient history is either not available or not provided but this risk of harm is far outweighed by the potentially life saving benefits provided. The charity’s beneficiaries are all members of the public, irrespective of race, gender or religion, who may at any time require our services. A private benefit to our volunteers may arise through our ongoing programme of first aid and pre hospital care training for our members. This benefit is incidental insofar it is a requirement that all our volunteers have, and maintain, a specified level of training in order to be able to fulfil our purpose of saving lives through the provision of our first aid, ambulance and medical support services. Purpose 2: The relief of those in need by reason of youth, age, ill health, disability, financial disadvantage or other hardship through the provision of community care initiatives; respite holidays at home and abroad; and through our support of the relief efforts of other Order of Malta organisations around the world. The direct benefits which flow from purpose 2 include holidays for the sick, children, older people with disabilities and the consequent respite for their families thereby reducing the stress and anxiety felt by family carers; provision of meals, social inclusion, medical treatment and friendship for the disadvantaged in our communities; funding and support for relief efforts in crisis and disaster situations as they arise across the world. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from those who avail of our respite holidays and their families; those who come to rely on our community care initiatives and who spread the word to others who are disadvantaged; through activity reports from international Order of Malta organisations across the world. This purpose does not lead to harm. The charity’s beneficiaries are the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in our communities and wider society including the sick and their families; older people; people living with disabilities; the homeless and the destitute. There is no private benefit flowing from this purpose. Purpose 3: The advancement of citizenship and community development through our youth training initiatives The direct benefits which flow from purpose 3 include first aid and personal development skills attained by the Cadet (10 – 16) and Youth (16-18) sections of our organisation and the contribution these young people make to their communities. These benefits are demonstrated through the development of leadership and specialist skills in our younger members many of whom remain with the organisation into adulthood and become actively involved in delivering our other purposes. Many of these young people, as a direct result of their Order of Malta training, enter careers in medicine, nursing and paramedic, thereby continuing our life saving ethos into their professional lives. This purpose does not lead to harm. The charity’s beneficiaries are children and young people aged 10 to 18. There is no private benefit flowing from this purpose.

What your organisation does

Our promise: Saving Lives. Touching Lives. Changing Lives. -Saving Lives.......with care: Our members come across real life scenarios where we need to use our skills and expertise to save lives. Whether it's providing trained volunteer personnel to provide medical support and first aid services at local and national events, training members of the

public or a young Cadet (our 10-16 year old members) in basic CPR, whether it's supporting the neo-natal Unit of the Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem, we are working together for the common purpose of saving lives. Order of Malta volunteers are everyday heroes, doing extraordinary things - intervening when people are in crisis and emergency situations and saving lives. -Touching Lives.....with Compassion: Across our community care initiatives, we show compassion to vulnerable groups such as the sick and older people and reach out to young children and adults with disabilities in the spirit of inclusion and friendship. We also support other charities in making a difference to society. -Changing Lives.....with support: As much of our work has an impact on changing the lives of the people we support, being a member of the Order of Malta provides many exciting learning opportunities, different experiences and personal challenges while forging life long friendships.
