Public benefits
Through the preservation of buildings and environments, the LBPT seeks to benefit the public by enabling people to acquire an enhanced understanding of social and economic history through having access to historic buildings and gardens with information provided about them in relation to their construction and historical associations. An enhanced
understanding of history brings benefits to people’s understanding of the present and can influence their activities – eg they might decide to further their understanding of history by visiting other similar historic buildings thus also bringing economic benefits to other areas. We have restored the outbuildings of a listed building and the general public can access the restored outbuildings. We also use these as self-catering accommodation to help cover the costs of their preservation and increase public access to them. Using the preserved buildings as self-catering accommodation also provides a place of serenity and beauty where people can recharge their batteries and thus enhance their general well-being. This is a benefit for the public at large i.e. anyone who chooses to visit the property. We know that this is experienced as a benefit from the notes left in our Visitors' Book by guests for example as follows: ‘Beautiful setting, love the fort (Coolnacran rath, and Johnston’s Fort on the Woodland and Boundary Walks respectively) . ……. Loved the sense of history all around’. ‘Peaceful and tranquil. Beautiful setting. House wonderful’. The purpose of our charity is not likely to lead to any harm to anybody. The private benefits flowing from this purpose are a) for the trustees who gain experience from training in good governance, b) the employees who benefit financially from their contribution to its upkeep, and c) for the owners eventually if and when the property is returned to the family in a better condition than it was in before it was leased to the Loughbrickland Buildings Preservation Trust. However the latter private benefit is mediated and diluted by the substantial contributions, both financial and in kind, which have been and are continually being made to the restoration and upkeep of the property by members of the family.

Loughbrickland Buildings Preservation Trust preserves buildings or structures of historic environmental industrial or constructional merit or interest in the Loughbrickland area of County Down.It contributes to the advancement of arts culture and heritage through the promotion of heritage. Heritage in its tangible and intangible forms is part of
a country’s local or national history and traditions which are passed down through successive generations. Advancing heritage includes preserving historic land, buildings and items. Information about the history of the buildings is available to guests in attractive, printed and illustrated form.

Charitable purposes
To secure for the public benefit by such means as are available: the preservation and protection of buildings or structures of particular beauty or of historic environmental, architectural, industrial or constructional merit or interest in the Loughbrickland area of the County of Down, and the preservation and protection of any buildings ancillary to such buildings or structures, and the restoration, renovation and conservation of gardens, parkland, planned landscapes, and other open spaces or land related to such buildings or structures, and to stimulate and educate public interest therein.
