Public benefits
The general public benefit from interaction of like-minded people they meet at the conferences organised by the ULHT, as well as from learning more about history and culture from the talks. This is proved by the large attendance at the conferences and the remarks made to the Trustees afterwards. Any money taken in entrance fees surplus to the cost
of the conference goes back into the bank account for future use in grant-aid. The beneficiaries are the general public and also the individual members of the public who seek funding and advice. There is only incidental private benefit when one of the Trustees is asked to be a 'reader' for the grant assessment or spend a lot of time on organising the conferences for which they get an 'honorarium'. This is only a fraction of the cost 'outsourcing' would incur. These Trustees are only asked to do this if they have the correct qualifications. No Trustee is paid a salary. The Trustees are only appointed to be Trustees when they are deemed to already have the qualifications to act in that capacity, hence they are not sent on any courses from which they might benefit. There is no harm done by any of the work undertaken by the Ulster Local History Trust.
What your organisation does
The ULHT holds meetings at least twice a year to consider grant-aid to different literary projects and offer advice, money, or both, to applicants who are considered to uphold a certain standard. The ULHT also organises conferences regulary to unite different spheres of the world of history and academia for the benefit of the general public and
students of historical matters. The ULHT seeks to raise funds for this by applying for funding from statutory or voluntary bodies who will help with this aim.
